Integrated Pt100 RTD Measurements

The PXIe-4357 combines resistance measurement, sensor excitation and signal conditioning in a single PXI Express module. Each channel supplies a 0.9 mA excitation current, eliminating the need for a separate external excitation source in standard Pt100 measurement systems.

NI-DAQmx can automatically convert the measured resistance into temperature units using the configured RTD characteristics. Channel settings can be programmed individually, which makes it possible to accommodate different wiring configurations within the same test system.

2-Wire, 3-Wire and 4-Wire RTD Connections

  • 2-wire connection: Uses the fewest conductors but includes test-lead resistance in the measurement result.
  • 3-wire connection: Compensates for lead resistance when the conductor resistances are closely matched.
  • 4-wire connection: Provides the highest measurement accuracy by separating excitation and resistance-sensing paths.

A 4-wire connection is recommended for precision measurements and long sensor cables. A 3-wire configuration provides a practical balance between wiring cost and accuracy for many industrial applications.

High-Resolution and High-Speed Modes

The PXIe-4357 provides nine ADC timing modes. High-resolution modes deliver stronger 50 Hz and 60 Hz power-line noise rejection, while faster timing modes increase acquisition speed for applications with more rapidly changing temperatures.

At the highest-speed setting, the module supports an aggregate sample rate of up to 100 S/s with all 20 channels enabled. The appropriate timing mode should be selected according to the required measurement speed, noise rejection and accuracy.

PXI Triggering and Synchronization

The module supports start, reference and pause triggers through PXI trigger lines, PXI_STAR and PXIe differential star trigger resources. It can also synchronize its measurement clock with compatible PXI Express instruments.

These features allow temperature data to be correlated with voltage, current, strain, vibration and other measurements in synchronized validation systems.

Typical PXIe-4357 Applications

  • Battery-cell and battery-pack thermal testing
  • Automotive component validation
  • Environmental chamber monitoring
  • Electronic device thermal characterization
  • Aerospace system testing
  • Industrial process temperature monitoring
  • Power electronics testing
  • Heating and cooling system validation
  • Research and laboratory data acquisition
  • High-channel-count Pt100 measurements

NI-DAQmx Software Support

The PXIe-4357 is supported by the NI-DAQmx driver. Engineers can configure physical channels, RTD wiring methods, measurement ranges, acquisition timing and trigger conditions through NI Measurement & Automation Explorer or supported programming environments.

Application development options include LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C, C# and other NI-DAQmx-compatible environments. NI FlexLogger can also be used to configure and log temperature measurements without developing a complete custom application.

TB-4357 Terminal Block

The TB-4357 is the dedicated front-mount terminal block for the PXIe-4357. It connects the module’s 96-pin DIN interface to 80 screw terminals, providing accessible connections for up to 20 RTD sensors.

The terminal block supports a maximum measurement range of 60 V. Shielded cables and compatible accessories should be used to maintain the specified electromagnetic compatibility and measurement performance.

PXI Express Chassis Integration

The PXIe-4357 is a standard 3U PXI Express peripheral module. It can be installed in compatible x1 or x4 PXI Express peripheral slots and PXI Express hybrid slots.

Unused chassis slots should be fitted with filler panels to maintain proper forced-air cooling. Allow the module to warm up for at least 15 minutes before performing measurements that require rated accuracy.

PXIe-4357 Troubleshooting

The module is not detected in NI MAX

Verify that the PXIe-4357 is fully seated in a compatible PXI Express or hybrid slot. Confirm that the chassis, controller and NI-DAQmx driver are operating correctly, then refresh the hardware list in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer.

The measured temperature is incorrect

Check that Pt100 is selected as the sensor type and verify the nominal resistance, temperature coefficient and Callendar-Van Dusen coefficients. The PXIe-4357 is designed for Pt100 sensors within a 0 Ω to 400 Ω resistance range and is not intended for direct Pt1000 measurement.

A 2-wire RTD shows a significant offset

In a 2-wire connection, the resistance of both sensor leads becomes part of the measurement. Use shorter conductors, compensate for the measured lead resistance in software or change to a 3-wire or 4-wire configuration.

A 3-wire RTD measurement is unstable or inaccurate

Confirm that all three conductors have similar resistance and are connected according to the TB-4357 wiring diagram. Unequal lead resistance reduces the effectiveness of 3-wire compensation.

The temperature readings contain excessive noise

Use shielded sensor cables, review grounding and routing, and keep RTD wiring away from motors, switching power supplies and high-current conductors. Select a slower ADC timing mode when stronger 50 Hz or 60 Hz noise rejection is required.

Selecting the PXIe-4357

Choose the PXIe-4357 when a PXI Express system requires up to 20 Pt100 sensors, 24-bit resolution and integrated RTD excitation. It is especially suitable when temperature measurements must be synchronized with other PXI instruments.

For thermocouple measurements, consider the PXIe-4353. If Pt1000 sensors are required, select a compatible Pt1000 measurement module such as the NI-9226 instead of using the PXIe-4357 outside its specified resistance range.

Why Choose the PXIe-4357?

  • Measures up to 20 Pt100 sensors in one PXI Express slot
  • Provides integrated excitation and signal conditioning
  • Supports 2-wire, 3-wire and precision 4-wire measurements
  • Offers selectable acquisition speed and noise rejection
  • Automatically converts resistance readings into temperature
  • Supports PXI triggering and synchronized measurements
  • Integrates with NI-DAQmx and FlexLogger
