PXIe-6544 32-Channel 100 MHz Digital Waveform Instrument

The NI PXIe-6544 is a PXI Express digital waveform generator and analyzer designed for digital interface testing, device validation, protocol development and automated production test. It provides 32 bidirectional single-ended digital channels, a maximum sample clock rate of 100 MHz and a maximum data rate of 100 Mbit/s per channel.

The PXIe-6544 supports common 1.2 V, 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V and 3.3 V digital logic families. It also provides waveform scripting, flexible clocking, per-bank timing adjustment and PXI synchronization for constructing repeatable digital and mixed-signal test systems.

Installed in a compatible PXI Express chassis, the module can operate alongside oscilloscopes, waveform generators, digital multimeters, power supplies and other PXI modules.

PXIe-6544 Product Overview

The PXIe-6544 combines high-speed digital waveform generation and acquisition in a single one-slot PXI Express module. Its 32 digital channels can generate stimulus patterns for a device under test or acquire digital responses for software-based analysis.

Compared with conventional static digital I/O modules, the PXIe-6544 provides faster operation, deeper onboard waveform memory, deterministic clocking and programmable digital timing. These capabilities make it suitable for testing embedded devices, FPGAs, digital sensors, memory devices and custom parallel interfaces.

The PXIe-6544 is available in two primary onboard memory configurations:

  • 780992-02: 8 Mbit of onboard memory per channel
  • 780992-03: 64 Mbit of onboard memory per channel

The appropriate memory version depends on the required pattern length, acquisition depth and number of waveform segments used by the test program.

Key Features of the PXIe-6544

32 Bidirectional Digital Channels

The PXIe-6544 provides 32 single-ended digital channels that can generate or acquire digital data. The channel count supports common 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit parallel interfaces while allowing individual channels to be assigned to data, address, command or status signals.

100 MHz Maximum Sample Clock

The onboard sample clock can operate from 100 Hz to 100 MHz. This broad timing range allows the same module to perform low-speed functional testing and higher-speed digital waveform validation.

100 Mbit/s Per-Channel Data Rate

The module supports a maximum single data rate of 100 Mbit/s per channel. Data is generated or acquired on one selected edge of the sample clock, providing deterministic timing across all 32 digital channels.

Selectable Digital Logic Families

The PXIe-6544 supports standard 1.2 V, 1.5 V, 1.8 V, 2.5 V and 3.3 V logic families. The selected logic family determines the generation voltage and acquisition threshold used by the digital channels.

Generation and acquisition sessions share a common voltage resource. Simultaneous operations must therefore use the same configured logic family.

Per-Bank Timing Adjustment

Digital channels are organized into timing banks that support programmable data delay. Engineers can use these adjustments to compensate for cable propagation delay, test-fixture skew and DUT setup-and-hold requirements.

Flexible Clock Sources

Waveforms can use the onboard clock, an external clock connected through CLK IN or a source-synchronous STROBE for acquisition. Clock output resources allow the PXIe-6544 to share timing with the DUT and other instruments.

Waveform Scripting

Onboard scripting supports waveform sequencing, looping, branching and trigger-controlled execution. Reusing common waveform segments can reduce memory consumption and simplify complex digital transactions.

PXI Express Synchronization

The PXIe-6544 can use PXI Express reference clocks and trigger resources to coordinate digital measurements with other modular instruments in a mixed-signal test system.

How the PXIe-6544 Works

During digital generation, waveform data is transferred from the PXI controller to onboard memory. The PXIe-6544 outputs the stored data using the selected sample clock, logic family, channel direction and timing configuration.

During acquisition, the module samples digital signals from the DUT and stores the captured values in onboard memory. The acquired data is transferred to the controller for decoding, comparison, visualization or automated pass/fail analysis.

The PXIe-6544 does not provide hardware-based expected-data comparison. Applications requiring real-time hardware comparison should consider the PXIe-6547 or PXIe-6548.

Clocking and Timing Options

Onboard Sample Clock

The internal clock provides a programmable range from 100 Hz to 100 MHz. It is suitable for generation and acquisition when the test system does not require an external timing source.

External CLK IN

An external sample clock can be connected through the front-panel CLK IN connector. This allows the PXIe-6544 to synchronize with another instrument, an external clock generator or the DUT.

Source-Synchronous STROBE

The STROBE input can be used as the acquisition sample clock. This function is useful for source-synchronous digital interfaces in which the DUT transmits data together with a clock or strobe.

Clock Export

The module can export clock signals through the front-panel CLK OUT connector. A generation sample clock can also be routed through the digital interface to provide synchronized timing to the DUT.

Data Delay Adjustment

Per-bank delay adjustment allows groups of channels to be shifted relative to the sample clock. This helps compensate for fixture skew and improves the available setup-and-hold margin.

Onboard Memory and Scripting

The PXIe-6544 uses NI Synchronization and Memory Core architecture. Waveform samples and script instructions share onboard memory, giving test developers flexibility in organizing digital test sequences.

Waveform scripting can be used to:

  • Sequence multiple digital waveforms
  • Repeat selected pattern sections
  • Wait for software or hardware triggers
  • Reuse initialization and idle patterns
  • Reduce duplicated waveform data
  • Create longer test sequences from smaller segments

PXIe-6544 Memory Options

780992-02 with 8 Mbit per Channel

The 8 Mbit/channel configuration is suitable for short and medium-length patterns, repeated transactions and applications that use scripting to reuse stored waveform segments.

780992-03 with 64 Mbit per Channel

The 64 Mbit/channel configuration provides additional storage for long nonrepeating patterns, deeper acquisitions and test programs containing multiple waveform sets.

Actual sample depth depends on the active channel width, waveform organization, acquisition requirements and number of script instructions stored in memory.

PXIe-6544 for Custom Protocol Testing

The PXIe-6544 is a waveform-based instrument rather than a fixed-protocol analyzer. Engineers can define pattern data, signal direction, logic family, sample timing and control sequences through software.

This approach supports proprietary and nonstandard digital interfaces within the instrument’s channel, voltage and timing limits. Protocol encoding and response analysis are typically handled by the host application.

Mixed-Signal System Integration

Many electronic devices require digital control combined with analog stimulus and measurement. The PXIe-6544 can operate in the same chassis as PXI digitizers, arbitrary waveform generators, digital multimeters, programmable power supplies and RF instruments.

PXI backplane reference clocks and trigger lines help coordinate these modules. A complete system can generate digital commands, apply analog stimulus and capture multiple DUT responses within a synchronized automated sequence.
