16-Bit Analog Input System
The USB-6210 measures as many as 16 single-ended voltage signals or eight differential signals. Differential wiring provides better rejection of common-mode noise, while single-ended wiring provides the highest channel count.
The four programmable ranges allow the ADC to be matched to different signal amplitudes. Selecting the smallest suitable range improves effective measurement sensitivity.
250 kS/s Aggregate Sampling
The maximum analog input rate is 250 kS/s for either single-channel or multichannel acquisition. When several channels are included in a scan, this rate is shared across the active channels.
The USB-6210 uses a multiplexed ADC architecture. Engineers should account for source impedance and channel-settling time when scanning signals with large voltage differences.
Digital I/O and Counter Functions
Four digital input lines can monitor switches and logic states, while four digital output lines can control indicators and compatible low-current logic circuits. The digital outputs are not intended to drive high-power loads directly.
Two 32-bit counters support edge counting, period measurement, frequency measurement, pulse generation and quadrature-encoder position measurements.
USB-6210 Applications
- Portable voltage measurement
- Laboratory data acquisition
- Educational experiments
- Sensor-output monitoring
- Test-fixture monitoring
- Event and pulse counting
- Rotary encoder measurement
- Low-speed automation
- Research data logging
Portable Data Acquisition
USB bus power and compact screw terminals make the USB-6210 suitable for temporary measurements and portable diagnostic systems. A laptop can provide both communication and device power.
Sensor Measurements
The device can acquire conditioned voltage outputs from temperature, pressure, force, position and other sensors. Sensors requiring excitation or signal conditioning need suitable external hardware.
USB-6210 Installation Workflow
Step 1: Install NI-DAQmx
Install a version of NI-DAQmx compatible with the computer operating system and application-development environment.
Step 2: Connect the Signal Wiring
Select differential, RSE or NRSE wiring according to the signal source and grounding arrangement. Keep analog wiring separated from motors and power cables.
Step 3: Connect the USB Cable
Connect the USB-6210 directly to a suitable USB 2.0 or later port. Avoid unpowered hubs when stable acquisition is required.
Step 4: Verify the Device
Open NI Measurement & Automation Explorer, confirm device detection and run a self-test.
Step 5: Configure the Measurement
Select the channels, terminal mode, voltage range, sampling rate and number of samples.
Step 6: Run a Test Acquisition
Use an NI-DAQmx test panel to confirm signal polarity, amplitude, noise and channel assignments.
USB-6210 Troubleshooting
The USB-6210 Is Not Detected
Check the USB cable, computer port and NI-DAQmx installation. Connect the device directly to the computer and try another known-good cable.
The Measurement Is Noisy
Use differential wiring, shielded cable and an appropriate input range. Confirm that every floating signal has a bias-current return path.
The Sample Rate Is Lower Than Expected
Confirm that the device is connected through USB 2.0 Hi-Speed rather than Full-Speed USB. Review channel count and software timing configuration.
Digital Outputs Cannot Drive the Load
Use an external relay, transistor or driver circuit for loads exceeding the output-current rating.
USB-6210 Comparison
| Model | Analog Inputs | Analog Outputs | Digital I/O | Isolation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB-6210 | 16, 250 kS/s | None | 4 DI and 4 DO | No |
| USB-6211 | 16, 250 kS/s | 2 | 4 DI and 4 DO | No |
| USB-6215 | 16, 250 kS/s | 2 | 4 DI and 4 DO | Yes |
Choose the USB-6210 when only analog input, basic digital I/O and counter functions are required. Choose the USB-6211 when analog stimulus or control outputs are also needed.
