The PCI-6280 uses one 68-pin VHDCI connector. Confirm cable compatibility because similarly sized 68-pin cables may have different shielding, connector orientation or supported signal assignments.

18-Bit High-Accuracy Analog Input

The 18-bit ADC provides greater measurement resolution than standard 16-bit M Series devices. This is useful when small signal changes must be detected across a relatively wide input range.

The card offers ranges down to ±0.1 V, allowing the programmable gain stage to use more of the ADC range for low-level voltage measurements. Source impedance, noise, grounding and settling time must still be considered when scanning several channels.

Selectable 40 kHz Input Filter

A selectable analog input filter reduces the signal bandwidth from approximately 750 kHz to 40 kHz. It can help reduce high-frequency noise when measuring slowly changing sensor and control signals.

Enabling the filter increases settling requirements during multichannel scanning. The application should allow sufficient convert time after changing channels or input ranges.

Digital I/O and Counters

The 24 digital lines support static control and correlated digital waveform operations. Two 32-bit counters can perform edge counting, pulse measurement, frequency measurement, encoder input and pulse-train generation.

RTSI Multi-Device Synchronization

The RTSI bus can route clocks and triggers between compatible PCI devices inside the same computer. This allows analog acquisition, digital I/O and counter tasks on several cards to start from a common hardware event.

PCI-6280 Applications

  • Precision voltage acquisition
  • Automated electronic testing
  • Scientific laboratory measurements
  • Sensor and transducer monitoring
  • Production functional testing
  • Data logging
  • Low-level signal measurements
  • Digital control and monitoring
  • Encoder and frequency measurements
  • Multi-device synchronized acquisition
  • Research and development
  • Legacy PCI test-system maintenance

Precision Sensor Acquisition

The selectable input ranges and 18-bit ADC make the PCI-6280 suitable for conditioned sensor signals. External signal conditioning is still required for thermocouples, strain gauges, IEPE sensors and other sensors that do not directly provide a compatible voltage.

Automated Test Equipment

Analog inputs can measure DUT voltages while digital lines and counters control fixtures, monitor status signals and generate timing events. NI-DAQmx coordinates these functions within one automated test application.

PCI-6280 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Confirm the Computer Interface

Verify that the computer provides a compatible conventional PCI slot. PCI Express-only systems require a different DAQ model or an appropriate external chassis solution.

Step 2: Install NI-DAQmx

Install a driver version compatible with the operating system and PCI-6280 before developing the measurement application.

Step 3: Install the PCI Card

Shut down and disconnect the computer, insert the PCI-6280 into the slot and secure its mounting bracket.

Step 4: Connect the Cable and Terminal Block

Attach the supported shielded cable and terminal accessory. Verify the PCI-6280 pinout before applying any signals.

Step 5: Configure the Device in NI MAX

Confirm that the board is detected, create channel configurations and run a self-test.

Step 6: Validate the Analog Inputs

Apply a known voltage within the selected range and compare the acquired result with a calibrated reference instrument.

Step 7: Configure Timing and Triggering

Set the sample rate, channel list, terminal configuration, filter state and hardware trigger required by the test.

PCI-6280 Troubleshooting

The computer does not detect the PCI-6280

Reseat the board, try another compatible PCI slot and confirm that the installed NI-DAQmx version supports both the device and operating system.

The acquired voltage is inaccurate

Check differential or single-ended terminal configuration, signal grounding, source impedance and input range. Allow at least the recommended 15-minute warm-up period.

Adjacent channels affect one another

Reduce source impedance, slow the convert clock or insert additional settling time between channels. Ghosting is more likely when scanning high-impedance sources.

The measurement contains excessive noise

Use differential connections and shielded cable, improve grounding and enable the 40 kHz filter when the required signal bandwidth permits it.

Digital waveform tasks do not start

The digital subsystem requires a sample clock from another onboard subsystem or an external source. Verify the clock route and trigger configuration.
