Four-Channel Transceiver Architecture

The NI-5783 can acquire four analog signals while generating four output waveforms. FPGA logic can process the input data and update the output channels with deterministic relationships.

This architecture supports closed-loop control, custom test instruments, multichannel baseband processing and signal-emulation systems.

Butterworth Filter Version

The Butterworth version, part number 784364-02, provides a smooth passband response suitable for time-domain measurements where waveform shape and transient response are important.

Elliptic Filter Version

The elliptic version, part number 784364-01, provides a sharper transition between the passband and stopband. It is suited to frequency-domain applications where stronger rejection close to the passband is valuable.

FPGA-Based Processing

The NI-5783 requires a compatible Kintex-7 FlexRIO FPGA module or supported standalone Controller for FlexRIO. The FPGA can implement digital filters, channelization, feedback control, modulation, demodulation and custom triggering.

NI-5783 Applications

  • Software-defined radio
  • Electronic warfare research
  • Medical imaging
  • High-performance machine control
  • Custom baseband transceivers
  • Multichannel waveform generation
  • Closed-loop control
  • Radar prototyping
  • Custom digital filtering
  • Real-time signal processing

Closed-Loop Control

The FPGA can acquire sensor or feedback signals, execute a custom control algorithm and update the output channels without relying on nondeterministic host-software timing.

Medical and Scientific Imaging

Multiple synchronized input and output channels support applicable imaging architectures requiring coordinated transmit waveforms and received-signal acquisition.

NI-5783 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Select the Filter Variant

Choose the Butterworth version for time-domain behavior or the elliptic version for sharper frequency-domain filtering.

Step 2: Verify FPGA Compatibility

Confirm that the selected FlexRIO FPGA module uses a supported Kintex-7 architecture.

Step 3: Assemble the FlexRIO Hardware

Power down the system and attach the NI-5783 to the FPGA module according to NI installation procedures.

Step 4: Install FlexRIO Software

Install compatible FlexRIO support, LabVIEW FPGA and any required component-level IP.

Step 5: Connect the Signals

Use 50 Ω HDBNC cables and verify signal amplitude before connecting each input or output.

Step 6: Deploy and Validate the FPGA Design

Compile the FPGA VI, verify clocking and test the system with low-amplitude known waveforms.

NI-5783 Troubleshooting

The adapter is not detected

Check the physical attachment to the FlexRIO FPGA module, software version and hardware compatibility.

The input waveform clips

Verify that the signal remains within the approximately 2 V peak-to-peak full-scale range and that DC offset is included in the calculation.

The frequency response differs from expectations

Confirm whether the installed unit is the Butterworth or elliptic version. Their filter transition and time-domain behavior are different.

The generated and acquired signals are not synchronized

Review FPGA clock domains, trigger routing, pipeline delay and the external reference-clock configuration.

The module is damaged after shutdown

NI specifies disconnecting signals before powering down and reconnecting them only after the FlexRIO hardware has powered the adapter.
