125 MHz Bandwidth and 250 MS/s Sampling

The PXIe-5114 provides 125 MHz analog bandwidth on most input ranges. Its maximum real-time sampling rate of 250 MS/s supports the acquisition of single-shot events, repetitive waveforms and transient signals within the instrument’s supported bandwidth.

For repetitive signals, random interleaved sampling can provide an effective sampling rate of up to 5 GS/s. This mode improves the displayed timing resolution of repetitive waveforms but is not intended for nonrepetitive or single-shot events.

Flexible Voltage Measurement Ranges

The PXIe-5114 provides full-scale input ranges from 40 mVpp to 40 Vpp. Smaller ranges improve sensitivity when measuring low-amplitude signals, while the larger ranges accommodate higher-voltage waveforms without requiring external attenuation in every application.

Programmable vertical offset allows a smaller input range to be positioned around a DC level. This makes it possible to examine small waveform variations riding on a larger DC component while using more of the available ADC range.

The maximum permitted input voltage depends on the selected impedance and signal characteristics. Appropriate probes, attenuation and protection should be used whenever the connected signal may exceed the specified input limits.

Selectable 50 Ω and 1 MΩ Input Impedance

Each analog channel can be configured for 50 Ω or 1 MΩ input impedance:

  • 50 Ω input is suitable for impedance-matched signal generators, communication circuits and high-frequency coaxial signal paths.
  • 1 MΩ input reduces loading on general electronic circuits and supports conventional passive oscilloscope probes.

Selecting the correct impedance is important for maintaining signal amplitude and reducing reflections. A signal source designed for a 50 Ω load may display approximately twice the expected amplitude when connected to a high-impedance input.

Input Coupling and Noise Filtering

DC coupling preserves the complete waveform, including its DC component. AC coupling can remove a large DC component so that smaller AC variations are easier to measure. On the PXIe-5114, AC coupling is available when using the 1 MΩ input configuration.

A programmable 20 MHz bandwidth-limiting filter helps reduce high-frequency noise when the signal of interest does not require the full 125 MHz bandwidth. GND coupling provides an internal reference for checking baseline and offset behavior.

Advanced Triggering Capabilities

The PXIe-5114 supports a broad selection of trigger types for capturing specific signal events:

  • Edge triggering
  • Window triggering
  • Hysteresis triggering
  • Video triggering
  • Digital triggering
  • Immediate triggering
  • Software triggering

Trigger sources include CH 0, CH 1, the front-panel external trigger input, PXI trigger lines, PFI lines and software. Programmable trigger delay and holdoff settings help isolate individual events within repetitive or complex waveforms.

Video triggering supports selected SDTV, EDTV and HDTV formats, making the module useful for automated testing of supported analog video timing and signal characteristics.

Deep Memory and Multi-Record Acquisition

The PXIe-5114 is available with 8 MB, 64 MB or 256 MB per-channel memory configurations. Deep onboard memory enables longer capture durations at high sample rates and supports multi-record acquisition for collecting repeated events with reduced software overhead.

Users can configure pretrigger and post-trigger samples from zero up to the full record length. Multi-record operation is particularly useful for production testing, pulse analysis and applications that require many triggered events rather than one continuous waveform.

PXI Timing and Synchronization

The PXIe-5114 can use its internal clock, a front-panel external sample clock or an external reference clock. It can also synchronize acquisitions with other supported PXI instruments through backplane timing and trigger resources.

NI-TClk technology allows the sample clocks and trigger responses of multiple supported instruments to be aligned. This is useful when building systems that combine several oscilloscopes or coordinate waveform acquisition with signal generators and other modular instruments.

Typical PXIe-5114 Applications

  • Automated electronic device validation
  • Production-line functional testing
  • Analog and mixed-signal waveform acquisition
  • Pulse-width and timing measurements
  • Power-supply startup and transient analysis
  • Component and circuit characterization
  • Automotive electronics testing
  • Supported analog video signal testing
  • Research and laboratory measurement systems
  • Synchronized PXI test platforms

NI-SCOPE and InstrumentStudio Support

The PXIe-5114 is controlled through the NI-SCOPE instrument driver. NI-SCOPE provides functions for instrument configuration, waveform acquisition, triggering, measurement, data transfer, calibration and automated testing.

Supported development environments include LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C/C++, C# and VB.NET, depending on the installed driver and operating system. InstrumentStudio provides an interactive soft front panel for configuring channels, triggers and acquisitions without first creating a test program.

NI Measurement & Automation Explorer can be used to identify the module, review device information, run self-tests and access basic configuration tools.

PXI Express Chassis Integration

The PXIe-5114 requires a compatible PXI Express chassis and either an embedded PXI controller or an external computer connection. Confirm that the selected chassis provides a compatible PXI Express peripheral slot, adequate cooling and sufficient controller bandwidth.

For reliable measurements, allow the module to warm up for at least 15 minutes and complete a self-calibration after warm-up. The chassis should maintain proper forced-air cooling, and unused slots should be fitted with appropriate filler panels when required.

PXIe-5114 Troubleshooting

Why is the PXIe-5114 not detected by the system?

Verify that the module is installed in a compatible PXI Express slot and that the chassis and controller are powered correctly. Install a supported NI-SCOPE driver, restart the system and check the device in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer.

Why does the measured amplitude appear incorrect?

Confirm the configured input impedance, voltage range, probe attenuation and vertical offset. A source designed for a 50 Ω termination can show an incorrect amplitude when the oscilloscope is configured for 1 MΩ.

Why is the waveform clipped?

Select a larger input range, adjust the vertical offset or use an appropriate attenuating probe. Before reconnecting the signal, verify that its maximum voltage remains within the permitted input limits.

How can waveform noise be reduced?

Enable the 20 MHz noise filter when the signal does not require the full bandwidth. Correct grounding, shielded cables, appropriate termination, shorter connections and waveform averaging can also reduce unwanted noise.

Why is AC coupling unavailable?

AC coupling is supported with the 1 MΩ input configuration. Change the channel impedance from 50 Ω to 1 MΩ before selecting AC coupling.

Why does random interleaved sampling not capture a transient correctly?

Random interleaved sampling requires a repetitive waveform. Use real-time sampling at up to 250 MS/s for single-shot events, nonrepetitive transients and irregular signals.
