National Instruments PCI-6713 8-Channel 12-Bit 1 MS/s Analog Output Device

PCI-6713 8-Channel High-Speed Analog Output Device

The PCI-6713 is an eight-channel PCI analog output device designed for high-speed waveform generation and deterministic control. Each channel includes a dedicated 12-bit digital-to-analog converter and supports update rates up to 1 MS/s.

Because the channels can update simultaneously, the PCI-6713 is suitable for applications requiring coordinated signal timing, including multichannel sensor simulation, three-phase signal generation, power-supply control and hardware-in-the-loop testing.

Key Features of the PCI-6713

  • Eight independent analog output channels
  • 12-bit voltage-output resolution
  • Up to 1 MS/s updates
  • Dedicated DAC for each analog output
  • Simultaneous multichannel generation
  • ±10 V output range
  • Eight 5 V TTL/CMOS digital I/O lines
  • Two 24-bit, 20 MHz counter/timers
  • Digital trigger and external clock support
  • 68-pin SCSI-type front connector
  • NI-DAQmx and LabVIEW support

Eight Independent DAC Channels

The PCI-6713 provides a dedicated DAC for each output instead of sharing one converter through a multiplexer. This allows all eight outputs to change at the same hardware-timed sample point.

Individual channels can generate different waveform shapes while remaining synchronized to the same sample clock and start trigger.

Multichannel Waveform Generation

Waveform arrays can contain a separate set of samples for every output channel. This supports phase-shifted sine waves, coordinated ramps, independent sensor profiles and complex test stimulus.

For continuous generation, the computer streams waveform data through the PCI interface. Appropriate buffer configuration helps prevent interruptions during sustained high-rate operation.

Control and Timing Resources

The eight digital lines and two counter/timers reduce the need for separate timing hardware in many test systems. Digital outputs can enable external equipment, while counters can generate pulses or measure external events.

For safety-critical applications, external interlocks should remain independent of software and general-purpose digital lines.

PCI-6713 Applications

  • Eight-channel arbitrary waveform generation
  • Three-phase power-signal simulation
  • Multichannel sensor simulation
  • Deterministic process control
  • Power-supply programming
  • Hardware-in-the-loop systems
  • Automated stimulus-response testing
  • Actuator command generation
  • Production verification systems
  • Laboratory automation

Three-Phase and Phase-Related Signals

Multiple outputs can create phase-related waveforms for testing monitoring electronics, controller inputs and signal-processing devices. The PCI-6713 generates low-level voltage signals; suitable isolation and amplification are required for power-level testing.

ECU and Controller Simulation

The device can simulate several changing sensor voltages simultaneously. A test sequence can reproduce start-up conditions, operating transitions and abnormal sensor values without using the physical sensors.

PCI-6713 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Confirm PCI and Driver Support

Verify the computer slot and operating-system compatibility before installation.

Step 2: Install the Device

Shut down the computer, discharge static electricity and secure the PCI-6713 in the PCI slot.

Step 3: Configure NI-DAQmx

Confirm that the device is recognized in NI MAX and run its self-test.

Step 4: Wire the Outputs

Connect the SH68-68-EPM cable and terminal accessory. Keep analog output and return wiring away from noisy power conductors.

Step 5: Create the Output Task

Configure the voltage range, sample clock, generation mode, buffer and trigger before enabling the DUT.

PCI-6713 Troubleshooting

Only some channels produce output

Verify the channel list, waveform-array dimensions and terminal-block pin assignments.

Waveforms are not synchronized

Configure the channels within one task and start them from the same hardware trigger.

A buffer-underflow error occurs

Increase the buffer, write data earlier and reduce other PCI or processor activity that could interrupt waveform streaming.

The output is noisy

Use shielded cabling, proper grounding and differential measurement equipment where appropriate. Separate signal wiring from switching loads.

The board cannot drive the load

Use an external amplifier or buffer. The PCI-6713 is a voltage-output device and is not designed to power high-current loads directly.

PCI-6713 Comparison

ModelChannelsResolutionBest Suited For
PCI-6711412 bitsFour-channel high-speed generation
PCI-6713812 bitsEight-channel high-speed generation
PCI-6722813 bitsHigher resolution at 800 kS/s
PCI-6733816 bitsHigh-resolution eight-channel generation

The PCI-6713 provides twice the channel count of the PCI-6711. The PCI-6733 offers the same eight-channel arrangement with higher 16-bit output resolution.
