National Instruments PXIe-6383 18-Bit 625 kS/s Multifunction DAQ Module

PXIe-6383 18-Bit Multifunction I/O Module

The NI PXIe-6383 is a high-resolution PXI Express multifunction data acquisition module designed for accurate automated measurements, mixed-signal testing and control applications.

The module provides 32 single-ended or 16 differential analog inputs with 18-bit resolution. It supports a maximum analog input rate of 625 kS/s on one channel and up to 500 kS/s aggregate during multichannel acquisition.

Four analog outputs, 48 digital I/O lines and four 32-bit counter/timers allow the PXIe-6383 to perform voltage acquisition, stimulus generation, fixture control and event timing from one module.

18-Bit Analog Input Resolution

An 18-bit converter divides the selected input range into more codes than a 16-bit converter. When noise, grounding and source quality are properly controlled, this allows the PXIe-6383 to resolve smaller changes in input voltage.

Resolution should not be interpreted as complete system accuracy. Offset, gain error, noise, source impedance, cabling and environmental conditions must also be included in the measurement uncertainty calculation.

625 kS/s Single-Channel Sampling

The maximum single-channel rate is 625 kS/s. During multichannel acquisition, the aggregate maximum is 500 kS/s because the input channels share a multiplexed ADC.

The PXIe-6383 is therefore optimized for applications that require greater resolution and accuracy rather than the highest available X Series sampling speed.

Four Analog Outputs

Four analog outputs support programmable DC levels, control voltages and hardware-timed waveforms. They can be synchronized with acquisition tasks to create automated stimulus-and-response tests.

Output drive, settling time and aggregate update rate should be checked when several channels generate fast or heavily loaded waveforms.

48 Digital I/O Lines

The module provides as many as 32 bidirectional digital I/O lines on Port 0 plus additional PFI signals. Digital lines can control fixtures, communicate with logic devices and route timing or trigger signals.

Hardware-timed pattern operations are useful when digital states must be aligned with analog acquisition or output generation.

Counter and Trigger Functions

Four 32-bit counter/timers perform frequency, period, pulse-width, encoder, PWM and event-count measurements. The module also includes a frequency-generator resource.

Supported trigger methods include internal software triggers, external digital triggers and analog triggers. This provides flexibility for capturing transient events or synchronizing several test instruments.

Typical PXIe-6383 Applications

  • Precision voltage measurements
  • Electronic device characterization
  • Mixed-signal production testing
  • Power and energy-system validation
  • Sensor and transducer acquisition
  • Automated control-system testing
  • Low-latency measurement systems
  • Laboratory research
  • Encoder and PWM testing
  • High-accuracy data logging

PXIe-6383 Troubleshooting

Measurements do not appear more stable than a 16-bit device

Additional ADC resolution does not remove external noise. Check the selected range, shielding, source impedance, ground loops and terminal configuration.

The requested multichannel rate is rejected

Configure the combined scan rate at or below 500 kS/s. The 625 kS/s rate applies only to single-channel operation.

The device is missing from NI MAX

Install an NI-DAQmx release that explicitly supports the PXIe-6383. Older driver packages may not recognize this newer device model.

Counter measurements are unstable

Inspect the external signal for noise, slow edges and incorrect voltage levels. Add suitable signal conditioning or filtering when necessary.
