Eight-Slot PXI Express Architecture

The PXIe-1082 provides eight numbered chassis positions. The first position is reserved for a PXI Express system controller or compatible remote-control interface. The remaining positions support measurement modules and specialized timing hardware.

The peripheral section includes four hybrid slots, two PXI Express slots and one PXI Express system timing slot. This mixture supports high-bandwidth PXI Express instruments while preserving compatibility with many conventional PXI modules.

The system controller slot includes three expansion positions for compatible wider controllers. These controller expansion areas are not additional peripheral instrument slots.

Hybrid Peripheral Slots

The four hybrid peripheral slots accept compatible PXI Express modules and conventional PXI modules equipped with hybrid-compatible connectors. This allows engineers to combine legacy PXI instruments with newer PXI Express hardware.

Not every conventional PXI module can be installed in a hybrid slot. Modules with incompatible J2 connectors must not be forced into the chassis. Verify hybrid compatibility and software support before installation.

Dedicated PXI Express Peripheral Slots

The two PXI Express peripheral slots are intended for PXI Express modules and provide high-speed PCI Express connectivity to the system controller.

These positions are suitable for digitizers, FPGA modules, RF instruments and other devices requiring greater data bandwidth than conventional PCI-based PXI modules can provide.

PXI Express System Timing Slot

The system timing slot accepts a compatible PXI Express timing and synchronization module. It provides access to PXI and PXI Express timing resources, including reference clocks and star-trigger connections.

A system timing module can distribute a more accurate clock, route triggers between instruments or synchronize the chassis with external equipment. The slot can also accept compatible peripheral modules when a dedicated timing module is not required, subject to the module’s slot compatibility.

8 GB/s System Bandwidth

The PXIe-1082 provides up to 8 GB/s of aggregate system bandwidth. Its backplane uses PCI Express connections to support high-speed data transfers between the system controller and installed PXI Express modules.

This performance supports applications involving high-speed digitizers, FPGA modules, RF instruments and simultaneous data acquisition. Actual sustained throughput depends on the system controller, module interfaces, driver configuration, host memory and storage system.

When several modules transfer data concurrently, calculate the combined traffic and consider the backplane topology. The maximum interface rate of one module does not guarantee that every installed instrument can sustain that rate simultaneously.

420 W Chassis Power

The PXIe-1082 provides up to 420 W of total usable DC power. The controller position supports up to 140 W of power dissipation, while each peripheral slot supports a maximum of 38.25 W.

System designers must check total wattage, individual voltage-rail current and per-slot limits. A configuration can remain below 420 W while exceeding the maximum current available on one voltage rail.

DC Power-Rail Capacity

Voltage RailMaximum Current
+3.3 V32 A
+5 V27 A
+12 V32 A
−12 V2.0 A
+5 V Auxiliary2.0 A

The power outputs include short-circuit and overload protection with automatic recovery. The +3.3 V and +5 V outputs also include overvoltage clamping.

38 W Per-Slot Cooling

Two 110 CFM fans create positive-pressure airflow through the installed modules. Air enters through the bottom rear of the chassis and moves from the bottom to the top of each module before exhausting through the sides and top.

The chassis supports up to 38.25 W of power dissipation per peripheral slot throughout its specified 0°C to 55°C operating range.

Use filler panels in unused slots and keep the ventilation openings clear. Incorrect airflow can cause a high-power instrument to overheat even when the chassis’s total power consumption remains within specification.

Automatic and High Fan Modes

The fan selector provides automatic and high-speed modes. Automatic mode adjusts cooling demand and reduces acoustic noise under moderate operating conditions.

High mode provides maximum airflow and is recommended for high-power module configurations, warm ambient environments and rack installations with limited surrounding ventilation.

External 10 MHz Reference Input

A rear-panel BNC connector accepts an external 10 MHz clock within ±100 ppm. The input supports sine-wave or square-wave amplitudes from 200 mVpp to 5 Vpp and presents a nominal 50 Ω impedance.

A system timing module can alternatively drive PXI_CLK10 through the system timing slot. This allows the chassis reference to be derived from specialized timing hardware when the application requires improved accuracy, disciplined timing or synchronization with another system.

External 10 MHz Reference Output

The rear-panel reference output provides the chassis 10 MHz clock for connection to compatible external instruments or additional chassis. Its output amplitude is 1 Vpp ±20% into 50 Ω and approximately 2 Vpp when unloaded.

Reference-clock sharing can align frequency and reduce long-term drift between instruments. Exact sample alignment can still require common triggers, delay compensation and module-specific synchronization procedures.

PXI Star Trigger

The PXI star-trigger architecture provides dedicated point-to-point trigger paths between the system timing slot and the peripheral positions. Maximum slot-to-slot skew is 250 ps.

Star-trigger routing is useful when several instruments must begin acquisition or generation with closely controlled timing. A compatible timing module is required to actively drive or receive the applicable star-trigger resources.

PXI Express Differential Star Triggers

The chassis supports PXIe-DSTARA, PXIe-DSTARB and PXIe-DSTARC differential star-trigger resources. Maximum slot-to-slot skew is 150 ps, and maximum differential skew is 25 ps.

Differential star triggers provide high-quality timing paths for supported PXI Express instruments. The exact resources accessible to a module depend on its slot position and hardware design.

Remote Power Control

A rear-panel 9-pin D-Sub connector and power-mode switch allow the chassis power supply to be controlled from an external system. This is useful in production stations, rack systems and safety-control architectures.

The external circuit should be designed according to the official connector pinout and electrical limits. The AC cable remains the primary means of completely disconnecting mains power.

Replaceable Power-Supply Shuttle

The PXIe-1082 uses a serviceable power-supply shuttle designed for replacement in less than five minutes by qualified personnel. This can reduce downtime in long-running automated test systems.

The chassis does not provide a redundant or hot-swappable power supply. Disconnect AC power and follow the applicable service procedure before removing the power-supply assembly.

Embedded Controller Selection

A compatible PXI Express embedded controller can be installed in the system controller position. This creates a self-contained measurement system without requiring a separate external computer.

Controller selection should consider processor performance, memory, storage, operating system, physical width, PCI Express bandwidth and long-term driver support. Wider controllers use the dedicated expansion positions adjacent to the system slot.

Remote-Control Selection

A PXI Express remote-control module can connect the PXIe-1082 to an external desktop computer, industrial PC, workstation or server. The host-side interface, chassis-side module and cable must form a compatible system.

The remote-control connection should provide enough bandwidth for the installed instruments. The complete path is limited by its lowest-bandwidth component.

System Timing Module Selection

A compatible system timing module can occupy the dedicated timing slot when the application requires disciplined clocks, multiple trigger interfaces, GPS synchronization, IEEE 1588, IRIG or other advanced timing functions.

Timing-module features differ significantly by model. Verify the reference sources, oscillator type, trigger terminals, software support and required synchronization accuracy before ordering.

Rack-Mount Hardware

The PXIe-1082 supports optional front and rear rack-mount kits. The mounting-hole arrangement permits either end of the chassis to face the front of the instrument cabinet.

The rack must support the 8.8 kg chassis and maintain sufficient airflow. Heavy front-panel cables should use independent strain relief.

Filler Panels

Install approved filler panels over every unused chassis position. These panels help direct cooling air through the occupied slots and support the chassis’s electromagnetic compatibility configuration.

Leaving open positions uncovered can allow air to bypass high-power instruments, increasing their internal temperature.

Automated Test Equipment

The eight-slot architecture allows the PXIe-1082 to combine measurement, generation, switching and communication instruments in one modular platform.

A typical ATE configuration can include a digital multimeter, switch module, power supply, waveform generator, digitizer and digital I/O instrument under the control of LabVIEW, TestStand or another supported software environment.

High-Speed Data Acquisition

The 8 GB/s backplane supports multiple PXI Express digitizers and DAQ modules. Dedicated PCI Express links help move acquired data to the controller for processing, display and storage.

Before configuring continuous acquisition, calculate the aggregate data rate and confirm controller, memory and storage performance. Onboard memory and event-based acquisition can reduce sustained host traffic.

RF and Wireless Testing

The PXIe-1082 can house vector signal generators, vector signal analyzers, RF downconverters, synthesizers and switching modules for automated RF testing.

The system timing slot and backplane clocks help coordinate RF stimulus and measurement instruments. External reference connections allow the chassis to share a frequency reference with other test equipment.

Semiconductor Test

Source measure units, digital pattern instruments, waveform generators and switching hardware can be combined for semiconductor characterization and production testing.

PXI synchronization resources help coordinate source, capture and digital operations during parametric and functional measurements.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

The PXIe-1082 can combine FPGA hardware, analog I/O, digital I/O, vehicle communication interfaces and fault-insertion modules for controller validation.

Backplane clocks and triggers support deterministic coordination among compatible devices. The selected real-time controller and modules must meet the timing requirements of the simulation.

Synchronized Multichannel Measurement

A system timing module can distribute triggers and references through the PXI star and differential star resources. This helps align acquisitions across multiple digitizers or coordinate waveform generation with measurement.

For multichassis systems, the rear-panel 10 MHz input and output can share a common frequency reference. Trigger routing and delay calibration may also be required for sample-level alignment.

Mixed PXI and PXI Express Systems

The four hybrid peripheral slots allow compatible conventional PXI modules to operate alongside newer PXI Express hardware. This helps preserve investment in established switching, communication and measurement modules.

Driver availability should be reviewed when moving an older PXI instrument to a newer controller or operating system.

PXIe-1082 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Plan the Slot Layout

Identify the controller slot, hybrid slots, dedicated PXI Express slots and system timing slot. Match every instrument to a compatible physical and electrical slot before installation.

Step 2: Calculate Power and Bandwidth

Add the controller and module power requirements and verify total power, voltage-rail current and per-slot dissipation. Confirm that no peripheral exceeds 38.25 W.

Calculate the expected simultaneous data rate and compare it with the chassis, controller and storage-system capabilities.

Step 3: Prepare the Chassis Location

Place the chassis on a stable surface or install the appropriate rack-mount hardware. Maintain clear airflow around the bottom-rear intake, side openings and top exhaust.

Step 4: Disconnect AC Power

Turn off the chassis and unplug the AC cord before installing or removing hardware. The front-panel switch does not completely disconnect the chassis from mains power.

Step 5: Install the Controller

Install a compatible embedded controller or remote-control module in the system controller slot. Ensure that wider controllers use only the designated expansion area.

Step 6: Install the Timing Module

If required, install a compatible timing module in the system timing slot. Confirm the correct slot because the timing module requires access to specialized backplane resources.

Step 7: Install Peripheral Modules

Observe ESD precautions and insert each module into a compatible slot. Secure the ejector handle and retaining screws without forcing the backplane connectors.

Step 8: Install Filler Panels

Cover every unused slot with an approved filler panel to maintain proper airflow and electromagnetic compatibility.

Step 9: Connect External Timing Signals

When using an external 10 MHz reference, connect an appropriate 50 Ω BNC cable and verify the source frequency and amplitude before applying the signal.

Step 10: Connect Power and Start the System

Use a correctly grounded AC connection. Apply power according to the controller or remote-interface startup instructions and verify that the chassis fans and indicators operate normally.

Step 11: Verify Hardware in NI MAX

Open NI Measurement & Automation Explorer and confirm that the chassis, controller and all installed instruments are detected. Install or update the appropriate drivers when a module is missing.

Step 12: Validate Timing and Throughput

Run a representative measurement sequence to verify clock selection, trigger routing, sustained bandwidth and data storage. Monitor temperature and system stability under the expected operating load.

PXIe-1082 Troubleshooting

The PXIe-1082 Does Not Power On

Confirm that the AC outlet and cable are functional and that the rear-panel power-mode switch is correctly configured. Check whether an external inhibit signal is preventing startup.

Disconnect the AC cable before inspecting or servicing the system. The internal 10 A circuit breaker and power-supply shuttle should be handled according to the official service procedure.

The Controller Does Not Boot

Power down and reseat the controller. Check memory, storage, display and controller status indicators. Confirm that the controller’s physical width, BIOS and chassis compatibility are correct.

An Installed Module Is Not Detected

Refresh the hardware list in NI MAX, then verify the module driver and operating-system support. Power down and reseat the module if necessary.

If the instrument is a conventional PXI module, confirm that it has a hybrid-compatible connector and is installed in one of the four hybrid peripheral slots.

A PXI Module Does Not Fit

Do not force the module into the chassis. Dedicated PXI Express slots cannot accept conventional PXI modules, and some older PXI connector styles are not compatible with hybrid slots.

The Chassis Reports an Overtemperature Condition

Check both 110 CFM cooling fans and remove obstructions from the bottom-rear intake, side ventilation and top exhaust. Confirm that unused slots have filler panels.

Verify that no peripheral exceeds 38.25 W and that the ambient temperature remains between 0°C and 55°C.

The Fans Are Louder Than Expected

Check whether the selector is set to High. Automatic mode normally reduces fan speed under moderate conditions.

High fan speed can be necessary when the installed modules generate substantial heat. Do not obstruct airflow to reduce acoustic noise.

Data Transfer Is Slower Than Expected

Review the controller interface, slot location, module PCI Express link, simultaneous traffic and storage rate. The maximum 8 GB/s system bandwidth does not guarantee that every module can transfer at its maximum rate simultaneously.

The External Reference Clock Is Not Recognized

Verify that the source is 10 MHz within ±100 ppm and has an amplitude between 200 mVpp and 5 Vpp. Use a suitable 50 Ω BNC cable and confirm that the system is configured to use the external reference.

Modules Do Not Synchronize Correctly

Confirm the reference-clock source, trigger route, timing-module configuration and instrument driver settings. Check whether each module supports the selected star-trigger or differential star-trigger resource.

The Chassis Does Not Start Through Remote Inhibit

Verify the rear 9-pin connector wiring, power-mode switch position, logic signal and ground reference. Test the chassis in local power-control mode to separate an external-control problem from a chassis problem.

Continuous Acquisition Loses Data

Calculate the total acquisition rate and inspect DMA buffers, controller memory, CPU load and storage performance. Use onboard memory, decimation or event-based capture if the host cannot sustain the complete data stream.

The Power Supply Requires Replacement

Shut down the system and disconnect the AC cord. Follow the qualified service procedure for removing the power-supply shuttle. It is replaceable in less than five minutes but is not a redundant hot-swappable supply.
