14-Bit Measurement Resolution
The 14-bit ADC provides greater vertical resolution than conventional 8-bit oscilloscopes. This helps distinguish smaller changes in a waveform, especially when the selected input range closely matches the signal amplitude.
Effective measurement quality also depends on noise, distortion, bandwidth and the signal source. Additional nominal ADC bits do not by themselves guarantee equivalent usable resolution under all conditions.
Simultaneous Sampling
Every enabled analog channel is sampled simultaneously at rates up to 250 MS/s. This prevents the channel-to-channel timing uncertainty associated with multiplexed ADC architectures.
Simultaneous sampling is important for phase comparison, three-phase power analysis, motor testing, timing measurements and correlated transient capture.
Four- and Eight-Channel Versions
The 790584-01 version provides four channels and 256 MB of shared onboard memory. The 790585-01 version provides eight channels and 512 MB of shared memory.
Select the four-channel model when chassis cost and channel requirements are limited. Select the eight-channel version when signal correlation or channel density is more important.
50 Ω and 1 MΩ Inputs
The 50 Ω input mode is suitable for terminated high-frequency signal paths and laboratory RF-style connections. The 1 MΩ mode is suitable for passive probes and higher-voltage general-purpose measurements.
Before connecting a signal, verify the active input impedance. Accidentally applying a high-energy signal to a 50 Ω input can overload the source or damage the module.
Flexible Trigger System
Supported trigger types include edge, window, hysteresis, digital, immediate and software triggering. Any analog input can act as an analog trigger source.
The AUX connector provides eight bidirectional digital PFI lines. PXI trigger and differential-star resources can coordinate acquisitions with other modules.
Onboard Memory and Multi-Record Acquisition
Onboard memory stores acquired waveform records before transfer to the host. Multi-record acquisition can capture many triggered events with less software dead time than repeatedly initiating individual acquisitions.
The memory is shared among enabled channels, so the maximum samples per channel depend on channel count, record configuration and acquisition mode.
Digital Bandwidth Filters
Selectable 20 MHz, 40 MHz and 80 MHz digital filters can reduce high-frequency noise when the full 100 MHz bandwidth is not required.
Using an appropriate bandwidth limit can improve waveform readability and measurement repeatability without changing the external signal path.
PXIe-5108 Applications
- Multichannel automated waveform acquisition
- Production functional testing
- Power-electronics validation
- Motor and inverter measurements
- Transient and pulse capture
- Electromechanical system testing
- High-channel-count oscilloscope systems
- Audio and ultrasonic measurements

NI-SCOPE Software Support
NI-SCOPE provides APIs for configuring sample rate, input range, coupling, impedance, record length and triggers. Acquired data can be transferred to the host for analysis, display or storage.
The driver integrates with LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI and compatible text-based programming environments. Self-calibration is recommended after the specified warm-up period or significant temperature changes.
PXIe-5108 Troubleshooting
The measured amplitude is incorrect
Check the selected input impedance, probe attenuation and voltage range. A source intended for a 50 Ω termination can produce approximately twice the expected voltage when connected to a 1 MΩ input.
The waveform appears clipped
Select a larger input range and verify that the signal, including vertical offset, remains within the permitted input and overload limits.
The waveform contains excessive noise
Use a smaller appropriate input range, enable a bandwidth-limiting filter and inspect grounding, shielding and probe compensation.
Only four channels appear
Check the complete part number. The 790584-01 version has four channels, while the 790585-01 version has eight.
Channel timing is not aligned across modules
Use a shared reference or sample clock and compatible PXI Express synchronization resources. Perform self-calibration to compensate supported intermodule alignment errors.
The module does not reach specified accuracy
Allow at least the specified 15-minute warm-up, run self-calibration and verify chassis cooling and external-calibration status.
