PCI-6703 16-Channel Static Analog Voltage Output Device
The PCI-6703 is a high-resolution static analog output device for software-timed voltage generation. It provides 16 independent 16-bit voltage output channels that can be programmed across a bipolar range of approximately ±10 V.
The device is designed for DC setpoint generation, process control, sensor excitation and automated test systems that require many stable analog outputs but do not require hardware-timed waveform generation.
Eight bidirectional 5 V TTL/CMOS digital I/O lines provide additional control and status-monitoring capability. Independent programmable power-up states allow the outputs to return to defined values when the computer starts.

Sixteen Independent Voltage Outputs
Each PCI-6703 channel can be assigned a different static voltage. This supports multichannel actuator commands, programmable references, calibration voltages and sensor-excitation levels.
The outputs share a time-division-multiplexed 16-bit DAC architecture with sample-and-hold circuits maintaining each channel’s programmed value between internal updates.
16-Bit Output Resolution
The 16-bit architecture divides the full bipolar output span into 65,536 codes. It provides fine DC setpoint adjustment for calibration and control applications.
System accuracy also depends on load current, cable resistance, temperature, calibration status and external electrical noise.
Static Software-Timed Operation
The PCI-6703 is intended for software-timed output changes rather than continuous arbitrary waveform generation. It is best suited to values that remain stable until the application programs a new setpoint.
For fast waveform generation, consider a hardware-timed analog output device such as the PCI-6733.
Programmable Power-Up States
Each analog channel can store an independent power-up value. This helps an automated system start with controlled setpoints instead of undefined output conditions.
Power-up states should be validated with the final fixture, especially when the outputs control sensitive equipment.
Eight Digital I/O Lines
Eight bidirectional TTL/CMOS lines can control enable signals, read equipment status or coordinate the analog outputs with external logic.
PCI-6703 Applications
- Multichannel DC setpoint generation
- Process-control reference outputs
- Sensor excitation
- Electronic calibration systems
- Programmable power-supply control
- Valve and actuator command signals
- Automated production testing
- Laboratory automation
- Static signal simulation
- Device bias control
PCI-6703 Installation Workflow
Step 1: Verify the Required Output Type
Confirm that the application needs software-timed ±10 V outputs rather than hardware-timed waveform generation.
Step 2: Install NI-DAQmx
Install a compatible NI-DAQmx version before fitting the PCI board.
Step 3: Install the Device
Power down the computer, follow ESD precautions and secure the PCI-6703 in its slot.
Step 4: Connect the Correct Cable
Use an SH68-68-D1 or another officially compatible cable and terminal block.
Step 5: Configure Power-Up Values
Program safe default states before connecting the outputs to active equipment.
Step 6: Verify Every Output
Measure each output with a suitable digital multimeter and verify channel mapping, polarity and scaling.
PCI-6703 Troubleshooting
An output voltage is lower than programmed
Check load current, cable resistance and output wiring. Confirm that the channel is not being asked to source more than its rated current.
The outputs do not update simultaneously
The PCI-6703 is a software-timed static output device and uses a multiplexed DAC architecture. It is not designed for phase-aligned waveform generation.
An output changes after restarting the computer
Check the stored power-up state and confirm that it is assigned to the correct physical device.
The output contains excessive noise
Use shielded cabling, separate analog lines from switching signals and confirm proper grounding.
