PCI-6154 Channel-to-Channel Isolated Multifunction DAQ Device
The PCI-6154 is an isolated S Series multifunction data acquisition device for industrial measurement, control, automotive testing and high-speed data logging. It provides four channel-to-channel isolated differential analog inputs and four channel-to-channel isolated analog outputs.
Each analog input has a dedicated 16-bit ADC and can sample at up to 250 kS/s per channel. The four analog outputs provide 16-bit resolution and simultaneous update rates up to 250 kS/s per channel.
The device also includes six bank-isolated digital inputs, four bank-isolated digital outputs and two 32-bit, 80 MHz counter/timers. Its isolated architecture helps protect the measurement system and reduce errors caused by ground loops and common-mode voltage.

Channel-to-Channel Analog Input Isolation
Every analog input is electrically isolated from the other analog channels and from the PCI bus. This helps the PCI-6154 measure signals with different ground references while reducing ground-loop current.
The continuous channel-to-channel isolation rating is 60 VDC. Isolation ratings must not be confused with the normal ±10 V measurement range; both limits must be observed.
Four Isolated Analog Outputs
The PCI-6154 provides four independent 16-bit analog outputs with simultaneous update rates up to 250 kS/s per channel. These outputs can control valves, actuators, programmable setpoints and other analog systems through software-defined waveforms.
NI documents that isolated outputs can be combined in series to generate voltages greater than ±10 V, reaching as much as ±40 V when all four channels are combined correctly. Series operation must follow the official wiring and isolation limitations.
Isolated Digital Input and Output
Six bank-isolated digital inputs can monitor switches, proximity sensors and logic states. Four bank-isolated digital outputs can control relays and compatible actuators.
The digital outputs are not intended to directly power large loads. External drivers, suppression and protection may be required for inductive or high-current devices.
32-Bit, 80 MHz Counter/Timers
Two 32-bit counters with an 80 MHz timebase provide more timing resolution and counting range than the 24-bit counters found on earlier S Series boards.
They can measure encoders, pulse width, frequency and period or generate pulse trains and PWM-style timing signals.
Isolation for Industrial Environments
Isolation is particularly useful in industrial systems containing motors, pumps, solenoids, long cable runs or equipment powered from different electrical circuits.
It reduces measurement problems caused by ground potential differences and provides additional protection against certain transient events. External fusing and safety barriers may still be required.

- Industrial monitoring and control
- Automotive electronic testing
- High-speed continuous data logging
- Valve and pump control
- Pressure and flow measurement

PCI-6154 Installation Workflow
Step 1: Review Isolation Requirements
Identify the maximum measurement voltage, common-mode difference and isolation voltage before connecting any source.
Step 2: Verify the PCI Computer
Confirm that the computer provides a compatible PCI slot and a supported NI-DAQmx and operating-system environment.
Step 3: Install the PCI-6154
Power down the host, follow ESD precautions, install the board and secure the mounting bracket.
Step 4: Install the Cable and Ferrites
Connect the correct 37-pin D-Sub cable and fit the specified snap-on ferrite cores according to NI installation guidance.
Step 5: Wire the Isolated Channels
Maintain the separate return path and isolation boundary for every analog channel. Do not unintentionally connect isolated returns together in the terminal block or fixture.
Step 6: Configure NI-DAQmx
Set the analog input ranges, sample rate, output range, digital directions, counters and trigger parameters.
Step 7: Test at a Safe Voltage
Begin with a known low-voltage signal and confirm channel operation before connecting the final industrial equipment.
PCI-6154 Troubleshooting
The isolated channels show the same ground noise
Inspect the external wiring for unintended connections between isolated returns. Connected shields, power-supply commons or fixture grounds can bypass the isolation barrier.
The analog input clips at a low voltage
Verify the configured input range and signal wiring. The isolation voltage rating does not increase the ±10 V maximum measurement range.
An analog output cannot drive the load
Check the required current and load impedance. Use an external amplifier or driver if the connected actuator exceeds the output capability.
The device fails EMC testing
Confirm that the specified ferrite cores are installed correctly on each external cable and that shielded cabling and enclosure practices follow NI guidance.
The board is not detected
Check the PCI slot, board seating, NI-DAQmx support and Windows Device Manager. Verify that the host supports conventional PCI hardware.
A digital output is damaged or unstable
Check output current, inductive transients and external voltage. Add a relay driver, flyback diode or surge suppressor when controlling an inductive load.

PCI-6154 vs PCI-6143
The PCI-6154 provides fewer analog inputs but adds channel-to-channel isolation and four isolated analog outputs. The PCI-6143 provides eight simultaneous analog inputs without isolation or analog generation.
PCI-6154 vs PCI-6233
The PCI-6154 uses one ADC per analog input and supports simultaneous sampling. The PCI-6233 uses a multiplexed analog input architecture and provides bank isolation rather than independent channel-to-channel analog isolation.
