Camera cables, terminal accessories, cameras and PXI Express chassis components should be selected separately according to the required Camera Link connector type and system configuration.

Base, Medium and Full Camera Link Support

The PXIe-1435 supports Camera Link cameras operating in Base, Medium and Full configurations. This allows the same frame grabber to accommodate a broad range of cameras, from standard industrial inspection cameras to high-data-rate imaging devices with wider pixel interfaces.

Although the front panel uses the Camera Link connections required by the selected configuration, the module supports acquisition from one camera. Medium and Full configurations use the additional Camera Link connection to transfer the wider image data stream from that camera.

85 MHz, 80-Bit Image Acquisition

The module supports Camera Link pixel clocks from 20 MHz to 85 MHz and data widths up to 80 bits. Its high-throughput architecture is suitable for cameras that generate large images, high frame rates or multiple pixels during each clock cycle.

Actual image throughput depends on the camera configuration, tap geometry, pixel depth, region of interest, frame timing and available PXI Express system bandwidth.

Power over Camera Link

Power over Camera Link allows a compatible camera to receive power through a PoCL-enabled Camera Link cable. This can reduce external wiring and simplify the installation of cameras in industrial systems.

The PXIe-1435 provides a nominal 12 V PoCL supply with up to 4 W of average output power. SafePower support helps protect the frame grabber and connected equipment when used with compatible cameras and cables.

Triggering and Digital I/O

Integrated digital I/O enables the PXIe-1435 to coordinate image acquisition with external equipment. The module provides four TTL digital lines and two optoisolated inputs for connecting sensors, lighting controllers, programmable logic controllers and other automation hardware.

These connections can be used to start an acquisition from a proximity sensor, synchronize a strobe with camera exposure or report an inspection event to another part of the production system.

Quadrature Encoder Input

A dedicated quadrature encoder input supports position-based image acquisition. This is particularly useful for conveyor inspection, web inspection and line-scan imaging systems where image timing must follow the movement of a product or material.

Encoder-based triggering helps maintain consistent spatial sampling even when the speed of the inspected object changes.

Camera Serial Communication

The PXIe-1435 supports Camera Link serial communication for configuring compatible cameras. Supported baud rates include 9.6, 19.2, 38.4, 57.6, 115.2, 230.4, 460.8 and 921.6 kbit/s.

Depending on the camera, serial commands can be used to configure exposure time, gain, operating mode, tap configuration and other acquisition parameters.

Typical Applications

  • Automated optical inspection
  • Semiconductor wafer and component inspection
  • Electronics manufacturing inspection
  • High-speed production-line monitoring
  • Line-scan and web inspection
  • Scientific and laboratory imaging
  • Life science and biomedical imaging
  • Microscopy and particle analysis
  • Motion-synchronized image acquisition
  • High-resolution surface inspection

Software Compatibility

The PXIe-1435 is supported by NI Vision Acquisition Software, which provides the drivers and utilities needed to configure the frame grabber, communicate with the camera and acquire images.

NI Measurement & Automation Explorer can be used to detect the module and test compatible cameras. Applications can be developed using LabVIEW and supported text-based programming environments. NI Vision Development Module can add image processing, analysis and inspection functions when required.

PXI Express System Integration

The PXIe-1435 installs in a compatible PXI Express chassis and requires an appropriate embedded controller or external computer connection. PXI Express makes it possible to combine image acquisition with motion control, data acquisition, digital I/O and measurement instruments in one synchronized platform.

Before ordering, verify chassis slot compatibility, controller resources, camera interface configuration, cable connector type, PoCL requirements and total system bandwidth.

Camera Link Cable Selection

Select the cable according to the connector fitted to the camera. Compatible NI PoCL cable options include the 199744-05 MDR-to-MDR cable and the 199745-05 MDR-to-SDR cable, both with a length of 5 m.

For PoCL operation, the camera, frame grabber and cable must all support Power over Camera Link. Cameras that do not support PoCL require a separate external power supply.

PXIe-1435 Troubleshooting

The camera is not detected

Confirm that NI Vision Acquisition Software is installed, the PXIe-1435 appears correctly in NI Measurement & Automation Explorer and the camera cable is connected securely. Verify that the camera is powered through PoCL or its external supply.

Images are incomplete or distorted

Check that the selected camera file matches the camera model, pixel format, tap geometry, bit depth and Base, Medium or Full configuration. An incorrect camera file can produce shifted, duplicated or incomplete image data.

The expected frame rate cannot be reached

Verify the camera exposure time, frame timing, region of interest, pixel clock and tap configuration. Also confirm that the PXI Express controller and chassis provide sufficient bandwidth for the complete acquisition system.

External triggering does not work

Check the selected trigger source, signal polarity, voltage level and camera acquisition mode. For industrial sensors connected to the isolated inputs, verify the wiring and external power requirements.

The PoCL camera does not power on

Confirm that both the camera and cable support PoCL and that the camera remains within the module’s available power rating. Inspect the cable and connectors before reconnecting the camera.

How to Select the Correct Frame Grabber

Choose the PXIe-1435 when the application requires Base, Medium or Full Camera Link acquisition in a modular PXI Express system. Confirm that the camera pixel clock does not exceed 85 MHz and that its tap geometry and pixel depth are supported.

Select a desktop PCI Express frame grabber when PXI integration is unnecessary. Choose a reconfigurable FPGA model such as the PCIe-1477 when images must be processed directly in hardware before being transferred to the host computer.
