National Instruments SWB-2815 4×86 Reed Relay Matrix Module for SwitchBlock

SWB-2815 4 × 86 Reed Matrix for NI SwitchBlock

The NI SWB-2815 is a 1-wire, 4 × 86 reed relay matrix card for NI SwitchBlock systems. It provides 344 crosspoints for routing shared instruments, sources, and DUT nodes under software control. Its high column density is intended for automated test systems that need four common signal paths connected to a large number of test points.

The module supports up to 100 V CAT I switching, 0.25 A switching current, 0.3 A carry current, and 3 W switching power per channel. It is designed for high-density signal routing rather than high-power switching. The SWB-2815 requires an NI PXI-2800 SwitchBlock carrier and cannot operate as a standalone PXI module.

The SWB-2815 is a high-density matrix, not a higher-power alternative to the SWB-2810. Its 4 × 86 topology doubles the number of columns, but its 0.25 A switching-current and 3 W switching-power limits must be checked against the intended source and DUT load.

SWB-2815 Matrix Architecture and Selection

4 × 86 High-Density Topology

The SWB-2815 provides four rows and 86 columns. It is suitable when a limited number of shared instruments or signal paths must be routed to a large number of DUT nodes. Typical uses include routing a DMM, power supply, signal source, or fixture interface across many points in an automated functional-test system.

A fully populated SwitchBlock carrier with six SWB-2815 cards can create a 4 × 516 matrix. With NI 2806 expansion bridges, multiple carriers can be combined into larger matrix systems. Select the expansion architecture from the required number of rows, columns, simultaneous connections, and total load budget.

Type A and Type B Card Selection

The NI 2815A and NI 2815B use the same 4 × 86 electrical topology. The Type A version provides row and column access to the SwitchBlock analog bus, while the Type B version is used for expansion. A complete SwitchBlock system can contain only one Type A module.

Relay Drive and Load Budget

Each energized SWB-2815 relay consumes 63 mW. NI specifies a 3.9 W power-dissipation limit for the card and carrier, with a simultaneous drive limit of 61 relays. A dense matrix does not mean that all crosspoints can be closed simultaneously; calculate relay-drive power across the complete carrier before running the final switching sequence.

Reed Relay Lifetime and Signal Protection

Relay life depends on the real switched load, including voltage, current, DUT capacitance, cable capacitance, and inductive behavior. NI specifies electrical life up to 1 × 109 operations at 5 V and 10 mA, 4 × 106 operations at 10 V and 100 mA, and 5 × 105 operations at 100 V and 10 mA with a resistive load below 10 pF.

Capacitive loads can cause damaging inrush current and inductive loads can generate flyback voltage. Evaluate the complete fixture and cable assembly, then use appropriate suppression or series resistance when required. The optional SH96F-96M-RES cable provides 100 Ω series resistance where that resistance is acceptable for the routed signal.

Safety and Operating Boundary

The SWB-2815 is rated for Measurement Category I only and must not be connected to mains circuits or Category II, III, or IV measurements. In a mixed-card SwitchBlock system, the lowest applicable voltage rating governs the connected system. When hazardous voltage is present, follow NI’s system safety requirements before connecting low-voltage channels.

SWB-2815 Applications

High-Density Functional Test

The SWB-2815 is suitable for production fixtures that need to route a small number of common instrument paths to many DUT test points. Its 86-column topology can reduce manual repatching in electronic assembly, PCB, and connector test systems.

Instrument Multiplexing

Engineers can route compatible DMM, low-power source, waveform-generator, or oscilloscope paths to selected DUT nodes under software control. Confirm the actual source voltage, current, bandwidth, and load type before using the matrix in the final test sequence.

Scalable SwitchBlock Systems

Multiple SWB-2815 modules can be combined in a PXI-2800 carrier or expanded across carriers where additional column capacity is required. This is useful when the application needs a structured high-density matrix rather than several independent switch modules.

SWB-2815 Comparison

SWB-2815 vs SWB-2810

Земля NI SWB-2810 provides a 4 × 43 topology with 1 A switching current, 150 V switching voltage, and 20 W switching power. Choose SWB-2815 when 86 columns are more important than power capability. Choose SWB-2810 when the application requires higher current, voltage, or switching power.

SWB-2815 vs SWB-2816

Земля NI SWB-2816 provides an 8 × 46 matrix in the same 100 V, low-current reed-matrix class. Select SWB-2815 for four rows and maximum column density; select SWB-2816 when the routing plan requires more shared instrument paths.

No. The SWB-2815 is a SwitchBlock matrix card and requires an NI PXI-2800 carrier for operation in a PXI chassis.

What is the difference between NI 2815A and NI 2815B?

Both versions are 4 × 86 reed matrices. NI 2815A provides row and column access; NI 2815B is used for expansion. A SwitchBlock system can use only one Type A card.

Can all 344 crosspoints be energized simultaneously?

No. The SWB-2815 has a simultaneous drive limit of 61 relays and a 3.9 W card and carrier power-dissipation limit. The complete carrier configuration must be reviewed before high-density switching.

Is the SWB-2815 suitable for 1 A switching?

No. The maximum switching current is 0.25 A per channel and the maximum carry current is 0.3 A per channel. Choose the SWB-2810 when the application requires 1 A switching capability.

Can the SWB-2815 switch mains voltage?

No. The SWB-2815 is rated for Measurement Category I only and must not be connected to mains circuits or Category II, III, or IV signals.
