National Instruments PXI-6115 4-Channel 10 MS/s Simultaneous-Sampling DAQ

PXI-6115 Simultaneous-Sampling Multifunction DAQ Module

Земля ПХИ-6115 высокоскоростной PXI multifunction I/O module designed for simultaneous analog acquisition, waveform generation, digital I/O and counter/timer measurements. It provides four 12-bit analog input channels with simultaneous sampling at up to 10 MS/s per channel.

In addition to high-speed analog acquisition, the PXI-6115 includes two 12-bit analog outputs, eight digital I/O lines and two 24-bit counter/timers. This combination makes it suitable for synchronized stimulus-response testing, transient signal capture, automotive electronics, radar, sonar and ultrasonic measurement systems.

PXI-6115 Product Overview

The PXI-6115 belongs to the NI S Series simultaneous-sampling DAQ family. Unlike multiplexed data acquisition devices that use a single ADC for multiple channels, the module provides a dedicated analog-to-digital converter for each input channel.

This architecture allows all four channels to capture samples at the same instant, reducing channel-to-channel timing errors when measuring phase relationships, transient events and correlated signals.

The module supports programmable input ranges from ±200 mV to ±42 V, AC or DC input coupling and software-selectable analog filters. Deep onboard input and output memory supports longer high-speed acquisitions and waveform-generation operations.

Key Features of the PXI-6115

Four Simultaneously Sampled Analog Inputs

The PXI-6115 provides four pseudodifferential analog input channels. Each channel uses its own 12-bit ADC and can sample at up to 10 MS/s, allowing all four signals to be acquired simultaneously without multiplexing delay.

Wide Programmable Input Ranges

Available bipolar input ranges include:

  • ±200 mV
  • ±500 mV
  • ±1 V
  • ±2 V
  • ±5 V
  • ±10 V
  • ±20 V
  • ±42 V

The extended ±20 V and ±42 V ranges are useful for protected secondary circuits and automotive electronic systems. The module is rated for Measurement Category I signals and must not be connected directly to CAT II, CAT III or CAT IV power-distribution circuits.

Software-Selectable Analog Filters

The analog input circuitry includes software-enabled three-pole Bessel filters with 50 kHz and 500 kHz cutoff frequencies. These filters can reduce out-of-band noise and aliasing when measuring lower-frequency signals.

Two High-Speed Analog Outputs

The PXI-6115 includes two 12-bit voltage output channels with a fixed ±10 V range. One channel can update at up to 4 MS/s, while both channels can operate at up to 2.5 MS/s per channel under supported system conditions.

The analog outputs can generate stimulus signals, test waveforms and control voltages while the analog input channels simultaneously record the response of the device under test.

Eight Digital I/O Lines

Eight TTL/CMOS-compatible digital I/O lines support device control, state monitoring and digital handshaking. The digital subsystem supports transfers up to 10 Mwords/s, with each word containing eight bits.

Two Counter/Timers

The module provides two 24-bit up/down counter/timers with a maximum source frequency of 20 MHz. They support applications such as event counting, pulse-width measurement, frequency measurement and pulse generation.

Analog and Digital Triggering

The PXI-6115 supports analog triggering from an analog input channel or an external trigger signal. Digital triggering supports rising- or falling-edge operation, while the PXI trigger bus and star trigger provide synchronization with other instruments in the chassis.

How the PXI-6115 Works

Each analog input channel has an independent ADC and signal-conditioning path. When a sample clock occurs, all four ADCs capture their respective signals at the same time. The resulting data is transferred to onboard memory or the host controller through DMA.

The analog output subsystem can generate voltage waveforms while the inputs measure the resulting response. Digital I/O and counter/timer resources can coordinate relays, sensors, actuators and external test equipment within the same application.

This integrated architecture is especially useful for closed-loop and stimulus-response tests that require precise timing among acquisition, generation and digital control.

Simultaneous Sampling Advantages

Simultaneous sampling is important when the timing relationship between channels must be preserved. Common examples include phase measurements, vibration analysis, transient capture and multichannel waveform comparison.

Because the PXI-6115 does not introduce multiplexing delay between its four analog inputs, engineers can compare signals using a common sample clock and consistent channel timing.

Software and System Integration

The PXI-6115 is supported through the NI-DAQmx driver. Applications can be developed using compatible versions of LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C/C++, .NET and other environments that support NI-DAQmx.

NI Measurement & Automation Explorer can be used to identify the module, configure channels, run test panels and perform basic troubleshooting before integrating it into an automated application.

A complete measurement system typically requires:

  • A compatible PXI or hybrid PXI Express chassis
  • A PXI embedded controller or remote-control interface
  • A compatible NI-DAQmx driver version
  • A 68-pin shielded cable
  • A compatible terminal block or custom interface fixture
  • Appropriate signal conditioning for the connected sensors

Cable and Terminal Block Selection

The PXI-6115 uses a 68-pin male SCSI-II type I/O connector. Suitable accessories may include shielded 68-pin cables and terminal blocks such as the SCB-68 family.

Before ordering an accessory, verify the connector type, cable pinout, shielding requirements and compatibility with the PXI-6115. Accessories intended for 68-pin VHDCI devices are not automatically compatible with its SCSI-style connector.

PXI-6115 Troubleshooting

Module Is Not Detected

Confirm that the module is fully seated in a compatible PXI slot. Check NI Measurement & Automation Explorer and verify that the installed NI-DAQmx version supports the PXI-6115 and the host operating system.

Input Data Appears Clipped

Select an input range that is larger than the expected signal amplitude. Also confirm that the positive and negative input terminals remain within their documented working-voltage limits.

Channels Show Unexpected Phase Differences

Verify that all channels belong to the same hardware-timed acquisition task and use the same sample clock. Cable length and external signal-conditioning delays should also be considered.

Measurements Contain Excessive Noise

Use shielded cables, correct grounding and the smallest practical input range. The 50 kHz or 500 kHz analog filter may help when the required signal bandwidth permits it.

Analog Output Rate Is Lower Than Expected

The maximum update rate depends on the number of active output channels. A single channel supports up to 4 MS/s, while two simultaneously active channels support up to 2.5 MS/s per channel.

PXI-6115 vs PXI-6120

Земля PXI-6120 provides the same basic four-input simultaneous-sampling architecture but increases analog input and output resolution to 16 bits. Its maximum analog input sample rate is 800 kS/s per channel.

The PXI-6115 is better suited to applications that prioritize acquisition speed, while the PXI-6120 is more appropriate when higher resolution is more important than maximum sampling rate.
