National Instruments SWB-2810 4 × 43 1 A Reed Relay Matrix Module for SwitchBlock

SWB-2810 4 × 43 1 A Reed Matrix for NI SwitchBlock

The NI SWB-2810 is a 1-wire, 4 × 43 reed relay matrix card for NI SwitchBlock systems. It provides 172 crosspoints for routing shared instruments, stimulus sources, and DUT test points under software control. The topology is designed for systems that require four common signal paths and a relatively high number of connection points.

The module supports 1 A maximum switching and carry current per channel, 150 V row-to-column switching, and 150 V CAT I row/column-to-ground operation. It is not a standalone PXI module and requires an NI PXI-2800 SwitchBlock carrier for installation in a PXI chassis.

SWB-2810 Matrix Architecture and Integration

4 × 43 Routing Topology

The SWB-2810 provides four rows and 43 columns. In a typical test system, the rows are connected to shared instruments or stimulus paths, while the columns connect to DUT pins, fixture nodes, or test points. Software closes the required crosspoint to route one selected row to one selected column.

This architecture is appropriate when several common instruments must serve a large number of DUT connections. If the application requires more shared rows and fewer columns, consider the NI SWB-2811 или NI SWB-2812 instead.

SwitchBlock Carrier and Relay Drive Budget

The SWB-2810 installs in the PXI-2800 carrier, which supports multiple SwitchBlock matrix cards and provides an integrated analog bus for larger routing systems. In NI MAX and NI-SWITCH, the card may be displayed as NI 2810A or NI 2810B rather than SWB-2810.

Each energized relay consumes 50 mW. Although the module provides 172 crosspoints, the system must remain within the 8.8 W power-dissipation limit of the card and carrier. Review the number of simultaneous closures across the complete carrier before deploying a high-density switching sequence.

Relay Lifetime and Load Protection

Reed relay life depends on switched voltage, current, load capacitance, cable capacitance, and protection design. NI specifies electrical life up to 1 × 108 operations at 10 V and 100 mA, 1 × 107 operations at 20 V and 500 mA, and 4 × 106 operations at 20 V and 1 A with a resistive load below 10 pF.

Capacitive loads can generate inrush current, while inductive loads can generate flyback voltage. Both conditions can shorten relay life. Evaluate the real load rather than relying only on the 1 A and 150 V maximum ratings. The 100 Ω SH96F-96M-RES cable may be appropriate when series protection resistance is acceptable for the application.

SWB-2810 Applications

Functional and Production Test

The SWB-2810 is suitable for automated functional test fixtures where DMMs, power supplies, waveform generators, or oscilloscopes must be routed to multiple DUT nodes. It reduces manual repatching and supports repeatable test sequences.

Electronic Assembly and PCB Validation

Engineers can use the 4 × 43 matrix to connect shared instruments to component nodes, connectors, rails, or signal paths during board validation and fault isolation. The final design should account for switching power, source impedance, and possible capacitive loading from the fixture and cable assembly.

Scalable SwitchBlock Systems

For routing systems larger than one card, the SWB-2810 can be combined with other compatible SwitchBlock modules in a PXI-2800 carrier. Select the matrix topology from the required row-to-column structure rather than total crosspoint count alone.

SWB-2810 Comparison

SWB-2810 vs SWB-2811

The SWB-2810 uses a 4 × 43 topology, while the SWB-2811 uses 8 × 21. Choose SWB-2810 for higher column density; choose SWB-2811 when the system needs more shared instrument or source paths.

SWB-2810 vs SWB-2812

The SWB-2812 provides a 16 × 9 matrix. It is more suitable for applications requiring many rows and fewer DUT nodes per row. SWB-2810 is the better fit for four shared paths across a larger number of columns.

SWB-2810 vs SWB-2815

Земля NI SWB-2815 provides a 4 × 86 topology for higher column density but is intended for lower-power switching. Select SWB-2810 when the application requires its 1 A and 150 V capability.

Часто задаваемые вопросы

Can the SWB-2810 be used directly in a PXI chassis?

No. The SWB-2810 is a SwitchBlock matrix card and requires an NI PXI-2800 carrier. It cannot operate as a standalone PXI module.

What is the difference between the NI 2810A and NI 2810B?

Both are 4 × 43, 1 A reed matrix cards. The NI 2810A provides row and column access; the NI 2810B is used for expansion. A SwitchBlock system can use only one Type A card.

Does 172 crosspoints mean that all relays can be closed at the same time?

Not automatically. Each energized relay consumes 50 mW, and NI specifies an 8.8 W card and carrier power-dissipation limit. The complete carrier configuration and simultaneous relay count must be reviewed before operation.

How can I improve relay life when switching capacitive loads?

NI shows that relay life can change significantly with circuit capacitance and series protection. In NI’s published 50 V example with 130 pF total load capacitance, the estimated life is approximately 500,000 operations without protection and approximately 25,000,000 operations with 50 Ω series protection. This is an engineering example, not a guaranteed lifetime; evaluate the actual DUT, cable, and instrument capacitance for the final system.

Can the SWB-2810 switch mains voltage?

No. The SWB-2810 is rated for Measurement Category I only. It must not be connected to mains circuits or used for Category II, III, or IV measurements.
