Universal Bridge Sensor Measurements

The PXIe-4339 supports quarter-bridge, half-bridge and full-bridge sensor configurations. This allows one module to acquire signals from strain gauges, load cells, pressure sensors, torque transducers and other Wheatstone bridge-based sensors.

Bridge configuration, input range, excitation voltage and filtering can be selected independently for each channel. This per-channel flexibility is useful in test systems that combine different sensor types and measurement ranges.

Quarter-, Half- and Full-Bridge Configurations

  • Quarter bridge: Commonly used with a single active strain gauge and requires the appropriate bridge-completion terminal block.
  • Half bridge: Supports two active or one active and one completion element, depending on the measurement configuration.
  • Full bridge: Uses four active bridge elements and generally provides higher sensitivity and improved temperature compensation.

The selected terminal block must match the resistance of the quarter-bridge sensor. NI provides separate front-mount terminal blocks for 120 Ω, 350 Ω and 1 kΩ bridge completion.

Simultaneous 25.6 kS/s Acquisition

Each of the eight channels uses a dedicated 24-bit Delta-Sigma ADC. All channels are sampled simultaneously at rates up to 25.6 kS/s, preserving timing relationships between multiple force, strain, pressure or torque signals.

Simultaneous sampling is especially important for dynamic structural measurements, mechanical event analysis and applications that require phase comparisons between sensors.

Programmable Bridge Excitation

The PXIe-4339 provides balanced constant-voltage excitation that can be programmed independently for each channel. Available settings range from 0.625 V to 10 V, with up to 30 mA of excitation current per channel.

Lower excitation voltages can help reduce strain-gauge self-heating, while higher excitation can improve output sensitivity when supported by the connected bridge. The maximum permitted excitation depends on the sensor resistance and bridge configuration.

Remote Sensing and Shunt Calibration

Remote-sense connections allow the PXIe-4339 to measure the excitation voltage at the bridge instead of only at the module. This helps compensate for voltage drops caused by long cables and conductor resistance.

Each channel also supports shunt calibration through the compatible terminal block. Shunt calibration introduces a known resistance change that can be used to verify the measurement channel, sensor wiring and scaling.

Direct Voltage Measurements

In addition to bridge measurements, the PXIe-4339 supports direct differential voltage input ranges of ±100 mV, ±200 mV, ±500 mV and ±10 V. This makes the module suitable for conditioned sensors and other voltage-output devices.

The voltage and bridge measurement modes are configured through software, allowing the same module to accommodate several sensor interface requirements.

Wide-Bandwidth Analog Outputs

Each channel includes a wide-bandwidth analog output derived from the first stage of the input signal chain. These outputs can be connected to external oscilloscopes, control systems or protection equipment when access to a conditioned analog representation of the sensor signal is required.

The measured value changes when the cable moves

Inspect the sensor cable and terminal connections for loose conductors or inadequate shielding. Use remote sensing for long cables and secure the wiring to prevent mechanical strain from affecting the connection.

The sensor output is noisy

Reduce the measurement bandwidth with digital filtering, use shielded twisted-pair wiring and separate sensor cables from noise sources. Confirm that the chassis and sensor shield are grounded correctly.

Excitation voltage is lower than configured
