National Instruments PXI-4204 8-Channel 16-Bit ±100 V Analog Input Module

PXI-4204 8-Channel High-Voltage Analog Input Module

Земля NI PXI-4204 is an eight-channel high-voltage analog input module for PXI measurement systems. It provides 16-bit resolution, simultaneous sampling and software-selectable input ranges extending to ±100 V.

The module is designed for applications that need direct acquisition of voltages beyond the ±10 V range supported by conventional multifunction DAQ devices. Typical uses include automotive electrical systems, battery testing, fuel-cell measurements and multichannel power monitoring.

All eight differential channels are sampled simultaneously. This preserves the timing relationship between channels when measuring switching events, power-up behavior and correlated transients.

The complete measurement path must be rated for the expected signal voltage. Check terminal block, wire, connector, insulation and fixture clearances before applying high-voltage signals.

±100 V Input Capability

The PXI-4204 can directly acquire bipolar voltages up to the selected ±100 V range. This reduces the need for separate external attenuators in many automotive and industrial measurement systems.

The selected range should cover normal operation and expected transients. Signals must remain within the module’s maximum input and common-mode limits even when the test system is starting, stopping or experiencing a fault.

Eight-Channel Simultaneous Sampling

Each channel has a dedicated sampling path so all eight inputs are acquired at the same instant. Simultaneous sampling is important when comparing phase, delay or transient timing between channels.

This architecture is especially useful for recording several battery cells, supply rails or automotive circuits during load changes and switching events.

Software-Selectable Filtering

Per-channel filtering helps adapt the module to different signal types. The 6 Hz low-pass option can reduce broadband noise in slow measurements, while the 10 kHz setting preserves faster waveform content.

The filter setting changes the signal bandwidth and settling behavior. Select the filter according to the fastest signal component that must be measured accurately.

Differential Measurement Architecture

All eight input channels are differential. Differential acquisition measures the voltage between two input terminals instead of measuring only against a shared chassis reference.

This can improve noise rejection, but the common-mode voltage of both terminals must still remain within the permitted operating limits.

42 V Automotive Measurements

The PXI-4204 is well suited to 42 V automotive systems and other vehicle electrical measurements that exceed the range of standard ±10 V DAQ hardware.

It can monitor supply rails, loads, charging behavior and voltage transients during ECU or subsystem validation. Appropriate protection remains necessary when the source can deliver substantial fault energy.

Battery and Fuel-Cell Testing

Battery and fuel-cell applications can use the eight simultaneous channels to record several voltages during charging, discharging and load steps. Simultaneous conversion helps maintain accurate time correlation between channels.

The PXI-4204 does not provide channel-to-channel isolation. Evaluate grounding and common-mode conditions carefully when measuring series-connected cells or floating sources.

Typical PXI-4204 Applications

  • 42 V automotive electrical testing
  • Battery and battery-pack validation
  • Fuel-cell measurements
  • High-voltage multichannel data logging
  • Power-supply testing
  • Automotive ECU validation
  • Industrial control-voltage monitoring
  • Simultaneous transient capture
  • Power-up and shutdown analysis
  • Research and laboratory measurements

NI-DAQmx Software Support

NI-DAQmx provides channel configuration, range selection, filtering, timing, triggering, data transfer and calibration functions for the PXI-4204.

NI MAX can be used to verify device detection and perform initial measurements. LabVIEW and supported text-based programming environments can automate acquisition, analysis, logging and report generation.

PXI-4204 Troubleshooting

The measured waveform is clipped

Select an input range that covers the full signal amplitude, including overshoot and startup transients. Never exceed the maximum input rating in an attempt to capture a larger signal.

Fast waveform details are missing

Check the configured filter. The 6 Hz setting intentionally removes higher-frequency content and is unsuitable for fast transient measurements.

Measurements show a large offset

Verify differential polarity, source grounding and common-mode voltage. Check the TB-2725 wiring and confirm that both input conductors are connected correctly.

Noise is higher than expected

Use twisted-pair wiring, shielding and a suitable grounding scheme. Keep input wiring away from motors, switching supplies and high-current conductors.

The module is not supported by a new application

The PXI-4204 is a legacy device. Confirm that the selected NI-DAQmx version and operating system continue to support it before migrating an existing system.
