DeviceNet Communication
DeviceNet combines CAN-based communication with standardized device profiles and network power distribution. A DeviceNet installation normally contains a trunk cable, shorter drop connections, a network power supply and termination at each end of the trunk.
The PCI-8532 allows a PC application to exchange cyclic I/O and explicit messages with compatible industrial devices.
Supported Communication Rates
The entire DeviceNet network must use one common communication rate. Lower data rates generally permit longer trunk and drop lengths, while 500 Kb/s provides higher communication speed with shorter allowable cable distances.
Every active node must be configured for the selected data rate before stable communication can be established.
DeviceNet Scanner Applications
In scanner operation, the PCI-8532 manages communication with multiple slave devices. The host application can read input assemblies, write output assemblies and access configuration or diagnostic attributes.
Network Power and Grounding
DeviceNet normally uses an external 24 VDC network supply. The network supply powers compatible nodes and transceiver circuitry; it is not supplied by the PCI bus.
Observe the correct V+, V-, CAN_H, CAN_L and shield connections. Incorrect power polarity can damage connected network equipment.
PCI-8532 Applications
- DeviceNet scanner systems
- Industrial sensor and actuator control
- Motor-drive and starter communication
- Valve-manifold integration
- Distributed I/O control
- Manufacturing automation
- DeviceNet product validation
- Network diagnostics
- Legacy production-line maintenance
- Automated equipment testing
Manufacturing Automation
The PCI-8532 can communicate with DeviceNet equipment installed on assembly, packaging and material-handling systems. A computer application can coordinate devices and record diagnostic information.
DeviceNet Product Testing
Manufacturers can use the PCI-8532 to verify network initialization, I/O assembly behavior, configuration attributes and fault responses of DeviceNet-compatible products.
PCI-8532 Installation Workflow
Step 1: Confirm Software Compatibility
Verify operating-system support for the required NI-Industrial Communications for DeviceNet release.
Step 2: Install the PCI-8532
Power down the computer and install the board in a compatible PCI slot using proper ESD handling.
Step 3: Build the DeviceNet Network
Connect the trunk, drops, network supply and termination resistors according to DeviceNet wiring practices.
Step 4: Configure Data Rate and Node Addresses
Set every node to the same baud rate and assign a unique MAC ID to each device.
Step 5: Configure the Scanner
Add the connected devices, define their input and output assembly sizes and configure the required polling behavior.
Step 6: Verify I/O Communication
Confirm that each device reaches the expected network state and that cyclic I/O data updates correctly.
PCI-8532 Troubleshooting
No DeviceNet devices are detected
Check network power, cable continuity, termination, baud rate and node addresses.
The network status indicates a bus-off condition
Inspect CAN_H and CAN_L polarity, termination resistance, electrical noise and mismatched communication rates.
One node repeatedly disconnects
Check its drop cable, connector, supply voltage and duplicate MAC ID conditions.
I/O data has the wrong size
Verify the configured input and output assembly instances and byte lengths against the device documentation.
The PCI-8532 is not detected by the computer
Check PCI seating, driver installation and operating-system compatibility.
PCI-8532 Comparison
| Модель | Protocol | Maximum Standard Rate | Platform |
|---|---|---|---|
| PCI-8531 | CANopen | 1 Mb/s CAN | PCI |
| PCI-8532 | DeviceNet | 500 Kb/s | PCI |
| PXI-8532 | DeviceNet | 500 Kb/s | PXI |
| NI-9882 | DeviceNet | 500 Kb/s | C Series |
Choose the PCI-8532 specifically for DeviceNet systems. Although DeviceNet and CANopen both use CAN technology, their higher-layer protocols and software interfaces are different.
