The 785971-01 Timing and Synchronization version adds an OCXO, rear-panel reference clock connections, high-density trigger connections, remote inhibit and chassis-monitoring features.

Both versions support two hot-swappable power supplies. One supply is included with the chassis; a second compatible power supply can be installed when the system requires additional power capacity or improved serviceability.

18-Slot PXI Express Architecture

The PXIe-1095 provides one system controller slot and 17 peripheral positions. The peripheral positions consist of 11 dedicated PXI Express slots, five PXI Express hybrid slots and one PXI Express system timing slot.

This configuration provides enough capacity to combine digitizers, waveform generators, RF instruments, source measure units, switching modules, FPGA devices and communication interfaces in a single chassis.

The controller position also provides three adjacent system expansion positions. These positions accommodate wider embedded controllers or system devices that require more than one physical slot.

Eleven PXI Express Peripheral Slots

The 11 dedicated PXI Express peripheral positions accept compatible PXI Express instruments. These slots are appropriate for digitizers, RF analyzers, waveform generators, FlexRIO devices and other modules that require PCI Express data transfer.

PXI Express modules cannot be installed in conventional PXI-only chassis positions. The PXIe-1095 avoids this limitation by providing a PCI Express connection to every peripheral position.

Five PXI Express Hybrid Slots

The five hybrid slots accept PXI Express modules and supported PXI hybrid-compatible instruments. This allows a system to combine current PXIe hardware with selected conventional PXI switch, measurement and communication modules.

Not every older PXI module is compatible with a hybrid slot. Modules with incompatible connector features or unsupported local-bus requirements must be checked against the module documentation before installation.

PXI Express System Timing Slot

The PXI Express system timing slot provides dedicated clock and trigger connections to the peripheral slots. A compatible timing module can replace, discipline or redistribute the chassis reference clocks and generate precisely aligned trigger signals.

This position is valuable in phase-coherent RF systems, synchronized digitizer arrays, multichannel waveform generation and multichassis data-acquisition applications.

If dedicated system timing functionality is not required, the position can support compatible PXI Express peripheral modules according to the applicable hardware documentation.

24 GB/s System Bandwidth

The PXIe-1095 backplane provides up to 24 GB/s of aggregate system bandwidth. Its PCI Express Gen 3 architecture supports high-speed data movement between the controller and installed instruments.

Supported peripheral positions can receive up to 8 GB/s of dedicated single-direction bandwidth through x8 Gen 3 PCI Express links. This is particularly useful for high-channel-count digitizers, FPGA coprocessing, peer-to-peer streaming and wideband RF acquisition.

Modules that require less bandwidth remain compatible, but their transfer rate is limited by the module interface and assigned PCI Express link. A complete system design should map the highest-throughput instruments to the most appropriate backplane positions.

Peer-to-Peer Data Streaming

Compatible PXI Express instruments can transfer data through the backplane without routing every sample through the host processor. Peer-to-peer streaming can reduce CPU loading and improve latency in FPGA, RF and real-time signal-processing applications.

Actual peer-to-peer support depends on the installed modules, controller, drivers and application software. Confirm that all selected devices support the required streaming architecture.

82 W Per-Slot Cooling

The PXIe-1095 provides selectable cooling profiles for modules with different thermal requirements. The 38 W profile supports conventional PXI Express instruments while reducing acoustic noise when maximum fan performance is unnecessary.

The 58 W profile supports modules dissipating up to 58 W per slot across the chassis’s 0°C to 55°C operating-temperature range. The 82 W profile supports modules dissipating up to 82 W per slot from 0°C to 40°C.

The higher profile is useful for high-performance FPGA, RF and power instruments. When any installed module requires more than 58 W of cooling, the maximum permitted ambient temperature is reduced to 40°C.

Advanced Chassis Cooling Design

Three 210 CFM fans provide positive-pressure cooling for the controller and peripheral modules. Air enters through the rear of the chassis, travels from the bottom to the top of each module and exits through the top enclosure vents.

A separate 70 CFM fan provides secondary cooling. Each power supply also includes dedicated fans, and the Timing and Synchronization hardware uses an additional controlled airflow path.

The chassis requires at least 101.6 mm of rear clearance and 44.45 mm of clearance above and on each side. Blocking these areas can increase internal temperature and reduce the available cooling margin.

Cooling Profile Selection

PXI Platform Services can determine the cooling requirements of supported NI modules and optimize chassis fan operation. Cooling profiles that cannot meet the installed module requirements may be disabled automatically.

The selected profile should always support the highest-power instrument in the system. Reducing fan speed to decrease noise is not appropriate when doing so would violate a module’s required cooling capacity.

Acoustic Performance

In the 38 W profile and Auto fan mode, the chassis can operate at approximately 37.7 dBA sound pressure at ambient temperatures up to 30°C. This setting is suitable for laboratories and engineering workspaces where acoustic noise is important.

The 58 W/82 W cooling profile produces higher fan noise because it must move more air through the modules. In Auto mode, the sound pressure is approximately 52.1 dBA at ambient temperatures up to 30°C.

High fan mode provides maximum airflow and is best suited to production racks, high-power configurations and elevated-temperature environments.

900 W Single-Power-Supply Operation

A standard PXIe-1095 includes one 900 W AC/DC power supply. The supply accepts a wide input-voltage range and provides power to the chassis controller, backplane and installed instruments.

The power supply includes protection against short circuits, overload and overvoltage conditions. Automatic recovery allows the outputs to resume operation after a qualifying overload condition has been removed.

Dual Hot-Swappable Power Supplies

A second 900 W supply can be installed to increase the maximum available chassis power to 1,644 W. This additional capacity is useful when many high-power modules are operated simultaneously.

The supplies are hot-swappable, allowing a failed or serviceable power supply to be replaced without disassembling the complete chassis. NI specifies a power-supply replacement time of less than one minute.

Dual supplies increase power capacity and maintainability, but the system designer must confirm whether the application’s actual load permits operation during the removal or failure of one supply. Dual installation should not automatically be interpreted as unconditional full-load redundancy.

Standard VCXO Reference Clock

The standard PXIe-1095 uses a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator with specified reference-clock accuracy of ±25 ppm. The chassis distributes a low-jitter 10 MHz clock and a differential 100 MHz clock to compatible modules.

The 10 MHz PXI_CLK10 signal provides maximum slot-to-slot skew of 250 ps and maximum phase jitter of 5 ps RMS. PXIe_CLK100 provides maximum slot-to-slot skew of 100 ps.

Optional OCXO Timing

The Timing and Synchronization version uses an oven-controlled crystal oscillator to provide improved clock accuracy and long-term stability. Within one year of calibration, the specified OCXO accuracy is ±80 ppb after the required warm-up period.

The OCXO version is beneficial for frequency measurements, RF generation and analysis, phase-coherent acquisition and tests requiring reduced reference-clock drift.

The OCXO requires warm-up time to reach its specified accuracy. NI’s calibration procedure specifies continuous operation before precision verification or adjustment.

PXI and PXI Express Triggering

The PXIe-1095 provides the standard eight-line PXI trigger bus, PXI star trigger and PXI Express differential star trigger resources. These backplane connections allow instruments to coordinate acquisition, generation and control operations.

PXI star triggering provides maximum slot-to-slot skew of 250 ps. The differential PXIe-DSTAR connections provide maximum slot-to-slot skew of 150 ps and maximum differential skew of 25 ps.

Timing and Synchronization Connections

The Timing and Synchronization configuration provides rear-panel 10 MHz reference input and output, high-density trigger connections and programmable function interface lines.

The external 10 MHz reference output has specified temperature accuracy of ±5 ppb and an aging rate of ±50 ppb per year. These connections can be used to coordinate the PXIe-1095 with compatible laboratory references or additional PXI chassis.

Remote Inhibit and Chassis Monitoring

The Timing and Synchronization configuration provides remote power-inhibit and chassis-monitoring signals. Remote inhibit can be integrated into a rack-level safety system, emergency shutdown circuit or facility-control architecture.

Fault and monitoring signals can be accessed using the compatible DB-to-BNC breakout cable. The interface should be wired according to the official pinout and logic-level specifications.

USB 3.0 Chassis Connection

A rear-panel USB 3.0 port supports chassis communication and configuration functions. PXI Platform Services and NI Measurement & Automation Explorer can be used to identify the chassis and review supported status or configuration information.

The USB connection does not replace the PXI Express system controller. Measurement data from installed instruments is transferred through the controller and chassis backplane.

Rack-Mount Integration

The 17.54-inch chassis width is designed for installation in a standard 19-inch equipment rack using compatible rack-mount hardware. Its 18-slot architecture is suitable for large automated test installations where many instruments must be centrally integrated.

The rack must provide sufficient structural support, cooling clearance and cable management. Because the chassis weighs as much as 17.7 kg with two supplies before instruments are installed, appropriate lifting and mounting procedures are required.

PXIe-1095 Applications

Semiconductor characterization and production testing

High-channel-count automated test equipment

RF and wireless device validation

Radar and electronic-warfare testing

High-speed oscilloscope and digitizer systems

Wideband signal generation and analysis

FPGA-based real-time signal processing

Симуляция с аппаратным входом

Automotive ECU and powertrain testing

Aerospace and defense validation

Electronic power and battery testing

Multichannel synchronized data acquisition

Peer-to-peer instrument streaming

Production functional testing

Research and laboratory automation

Системы тестирования полупроводников

The PXIe-1095 can host source measure units, digital pattern instruments, waveform generators, digitizers, power supplies and switching modules in a single high-density platform.

Its high-power and cooling capacity supports modules used for parametric test, mixed-signal validation, device characterization and production test. The 24 GB/s backplane helps move measurement data between instruments and the controller efficiently.

RF and Wireless Validation

Wideband RF test systems can combine vector signal transceivers, RF signal generators, analyzers, digitizers and RF switches inside the PXIe-1095.

The high-bandwidth backplane supports waveform transfer and real-time processing, while the optional OCXO and external clock connections help maintain frequency alignment between instruments.

Radar and Electronic-Warfare Testing

Radar and electronic-warfare applications often require wide instantaneous bandwidth, low-latency FPGA processing and coordinated generation and acquisition across several instruments.

The chassis’s Gen 3 backplane, system timing slot and high cooling capacity support these demanding configurations. Peer-to-peer transfers can move waveform data directly between compatible FPGA, digitizer and RF modules.

High-Speed Data Acquisition

Multiple high-speed digitizers can be installed for transient capture, physics research, component validation and multichannel waveform recording.

For sustained acquisition, the controller, memory, software buffers and storage array must be able to accept the combined data rate. Backplane bandwidth alone does not guarantee uninterrupted disk recording.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

The PXIe-1095 can integrate FPGA modules, analog I/O, digital I/O, communication interfaces, fault-insertion switches and real-time controllers for HIL validation.

The large slot count allows engineers to simulate many ECU signals in one system. Hardware clocks and triggers can coordinate simulation models, stimulus generation and response acquisition.

Electronic Power Testing

The 82 W cooling profile and dual-power-supply capacity support configurations containing high-power source measure units, programmable supplies and electronic loads.

Total power, rail current, module dissipation and rack temperature must be checked carefully. High-power instruments may also require additional wiring, safety barriers and fixture-level protection.

Multichannel Synchronized Measurement

The system timing slot and PXIe differential star triggers support synchronization across large groups of compatible instruments. This is valuable for phase measurements, acoustic arrays, vibration analysis and multichannel RF systems.

The Timing and Synchronization configuration can further improve reference-clock stability and provide external signal access for multichassis systems.

PXIe-1095 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Inspect the Chassis and Included Components

Inspect the enclosure, backplane connectors, power-supply bay, fans, air intake and rack-mounting points. Confirm that the required filler panels and regulatory documentation are included.

Do not power or install modules in a chassis that shows evidence of impact damage, bent backplane connectors, liquid contamination or damaged AC components.

Step 2: Prepare the Installation Environment

Place the chassis on a stable surface or install it in a properly supported 19-inch equipment rack. Account for the chassis weight plus the weight of the controller, instruments, power supplies and front-panel cables.

Rear Clearance

Provide at least 101.6 mm of clearance behind the chassis for module cooling air, power connections and cable access.

Top Clearance

Provide at least 44.45 mm above the chassis because the primary module and power-supply exhaust vents are located on the top.

Side Clearance

Provide at least 44.45 mm on each side to support secondary cooling and the Timing and Synchronization airflow path.

Step 3: Connect Protective Earth

Connect the chassis to a properly grounded AC supply. Where required by the facility installation or 400 Hz dual-supply operation, connect the rear protective-earth terminal using correctly rated grounding hardware.

Do not use an adapter that defeats the protective-earth conductor. Both AC power cords must be disconnected to remove all power from a dual-supply chassis.

Step 4: Plan the Slot Assignment

Create a slot map before installing hardware. Consider PCI Express bandwidth, module compatibility, cooling profile, power consumption, timing resources, controller width and cable clearance.

Controller Position

Install the PXI Express embedded controller or remote-control interface in the system controller slot. Reserve the adjacent expansion positions when the controller requires additional width.

High-Bandwidth Positions

Assign digitizers, FPGA devices and RF instruments to slots that provide the PCI Express link width required by each module.

Hybrid Positions

Use the five hybrid slots for supported conventional PXI instruments or PXI Express modules. Confirm hybrid compatibility before installing an older PXI device.

System Timing Position

Install a compatible timing module in the system timing slot when dedicated clock or differential star-trigger control is required.

Step 5: Calculate the Power Budget

Add the maximum power consumption of the controller and all peripheral modules. Check the total against the 900 W single-supply or 1,644 W dual-supply capacity.

Also verify the current required from the +12 V, +5 V, +3.3 V, −12 V and auxiliary rails. Remaining below the total wattage rating does not guarantee that every rail remains within its current limit.

Step 6: Select the Cooling Profile

Select the 38 W, 58 W or 82 W profile according to the highest cooling requirement among the installed modules.

Use the 58 W profile for operation up to 55°C when all modules dissipate 58 W or less. If any module requires more than 58 W and up to 82 W, keep the ambient temperature between 0°C and 40°C.

Step 7: Install the Controller and Instruments

Turn off the chassis and disconnect external signals before installing modules. Use appropriate electrostatic-discharge protection.

Align each module with the upper and lower guides, slide it evenly toward the backplane and use the injector/ejector handle to fully engage the connectors. Tighten the module retaining screws.

Step 8: Install Filler Panels

Cover all unused positions with the supplied filler panels. Filler panels maintain positive air pressure, direct cooling through the installed modules and support electromagnetic-compliance performance.

Step 9: Install the Second Power Supply if Required

Install the second compatible supply when the calculated system load exceeds the single-supply capacity or when the maintenance strategy requires a dual-supply configuration.

For high-power configurations, confirm that the facility branch circuit can support the required current. Separate branch circuits may be necessary for two heavily loaded supplies.

Step 10: Connect Timing and Trigger Cables

For the Timing and Synchronization configuration, connect the external reference clock, trigger-routing cables and remote-inhibit signals according to the system timing diagram.

Use 50 Ω clock cabling and suitable termination. Do not connect TTL or other incompatible signals to reference outputs that use a different specified amplitude or impedance.

Step 11: Power On and Configure the Chassis

Apply AC power and turn on the chassis. Confirm normal power-supply, temperature and fan indications before starting the controller.

Open NI Measurement & Automation Explorer and verify the chassis model, controller, installed modules and assigned slot positions.

Step 12: Validate the Complete System

Run instrument self-tests, verify clock-lock status and test the required trigger routes. Execute a representative data-transfer test to confirm that the controller and storage system meet the expected throughput.

Monitor chassis temperature, fan operation and power status during the initial full-load test before releasing the system for unattended use.

PXIe-1095 Troubleshooting

Chassis Power Problems

The chassis does not power on

Verify the AC source, power cord, branch-circuit capacity and front-panel power-inhibit setting. On the Timing and Synchronization model, confirm that the remote-inhibit signal is not preventing startup.

One power supply does not operate

Check the rear-panel supply indicator and AC input connection. Confirm that the power supply is fully seated and that both supplies are compatible with the PXIe-1095.

The chassis shuts down under load

Review total system power and individual voltage-rail current. Remove nonessential modules and test again. A high-power dual-supply system may require separate facility branch circuits.

Module Detection Problems

A module is missing in NI MAX

Power off the system and make sure the module is installed in a compatible slot and fully engaged with the backplane. Check the required instrument driver and refresh the NI MAX hardware list.

A conventional PXI module does not fit

The PXIe-1095 has five hybrid positions but no dedicated PXI-only slots. Confirm that the module supports installation in a PXI Express hybrid slot.

A PXI Express module operates at reduced bandwidth

Check the module’s PCI Express link requirements and the backplane link assigned to its slot. Move high-throughput instruments to the appropriate positions when the system slot map permits.

Cooling Problems

A module reports excessive temperature

Verify that the selected cooling profile meets the module requirement. Inspect the rear intake, top exhaust, side vents and filler panels. Switch to the appropriate high-performance fan setting when necessary.

The chassis fans are unusually loud

Higher cooling profiles intentionally increase fan speed. Check whether the installed modules require the 58 W/82 W profile and verify that high intake temperature is not causing the automatic fan controller to increase airflow.

A chassis fan reports a fault

Stop high-power operation and inspect the corresponding fan module. Continuing operation without adequate forced-air cooling can cause instruments to exceed their permitted temperature.

Bandwidth Problems

Data transfer is lower than 24 GB/s

The 24 GB/s value is an aggregate theoretical backplane rating. Actual throughput depends on the controller, slot link, instrument, DMA configuration, software and destination storage system.

Streaming stops during long acquisitions

Check host memory, DMA buffer size, processor utilization and disk write speed. Use a suitable RAID or NVMe storage architecture when continuous data exceeds the capability of a single storage device.

Peer-to-peer transfer does not work

Confirm that both modules, the selected slots, installed drivers and application software support peer-to-peer streaming. Standard host-based transfers do not automatically become peer-to-peer operations.

Clock and Trigger Problems

The external reference does not lock

Verify the reference frequency, amplitude, connector, impedance and termination. Make sure the signal is connected to the reference input and not the reference output.

Instruments drift apart over time

Confirm that every instrument uses the same chassis or external reference. A shared frequency reference reduces clock drift but does not automatically align the start time of separate acquisitions.

Trigger timing is inconsistent

Use backplane star or differential star triggers when low skew is required. Review the trigger route, timing-slot configuration and individual module trigger capabilities.

Communication Problems

The external host cannot detect the chassis

Check the PXI Express remote-control interface, host adapter and connecting cable. Follow the required system power-on sequence and confirm operating-system and driver support.

The chassis USB connection is unavailable

Inspect the USB cable and host port, then verify the installed PXI Platform Services version. The chassis USB connection is used for chassis services and does not replace the system controller connection.

PXIe-1095 Comparison

PXIe-1095 vs PXIe-1092

Функция

PXIe-1095

PXIe-1092

Общее количество слотов

18

10

Maximum System Bandwidth

24 ГБ/с

24 ГБ/с

Maximum Cooling

82 Вт на слот

82 Вт на слот

Гибридные слоты

5

7

Power-Supply Architecture

Supports two hot-swappable supplies

Lower-capacity chassis architecture

Best Suited For

Large, high-channel-count systems

Compact high-performance systems

Choose the PXIe-1095 when the application requires maximum slot capacity, many simultaneous instruments or dual hot-swappable power supplies.
