and TB-2651 terminal blocks are sold separately. Select the terminal block according to the required row count, column count and whether the application needs one large matrix or two independent matrices.

512-Crosspoint Matrix Architecture

The PXI-2531 contains 512 individually controlled crosspoints. A crosspoint is a relay connection between one matrix row and one matrix column. Closing a crosspoint connects the corresponding row and column so that a signal can be routed between an instrument and a test point.

This matrix architecture allows a small number of measurement or stimulus instruments to access hundreds of device-under-test connections without manually moving cables. Multiple crosspoints can be closed when the electrical requirements of the application permit those connections.

Unlike a multiplexer, a matrix is not limited to connecting only one input to one output. It can establish several simultaneous routes, making it useful for complex functional-test fixtures and multidevice test systems.

Configurable Matrix Topologies

The PXI-2531 supports four principal topologies through topology-specific terminal blocks and NI-SWITCH configuration. This allows the same switch module to be adapted to different automated-test architectures.

Topology

Recommended Terminal Block

Типичное использование

1-wire 4 × 128

TB-2648

Routing four instruments or buses to as many as 128 test points

Dual 4 × 64

TB-2649

Two independent four-row matrices for parallel test sections

1-wire 8 × 64

TB-2650

Routing as many as eight instrument lines to 64 test points

Dual 8 × 32

TB-2651

Two independent eight-row matrices for separate DUT groups

4 × 128 Matrix Configuration

In the 1-wire 4 × 128 topology, four matrix rows can connect to any of 128 columns. This is useful when a small group of instruments must measure or stimulate a large number of test points.

For example, a digital multimeter, source, signal generator and load-monitoring channel can share access to a 128-point test fixture. Software determines which crosspoints are closed during each step of the test sequence.

8 × 64 Matrix Configuration

The 1-wire 8 × 64 configuration provides more instrument-side rows while retaining 64 device-side columns. It is suitable when a DUT must be connected to several different measurement, stimulus or monitoring resources.

The topology remains a single-conductor matrix. Differential or two-conductor measurements require paired routes, careful software control or a switch module specifically designed for 2-wire operation.

Dual-Matrix Operation

The dual 4 × 64 and dual 8 × 32 topologies divide the module into two independent matrix sections. This enables separate devices, fixtures or instrument groups to operate without electrically connecting the two sections.

Dual-matrix configurations can help organize parallel production tests, separate analog and control signals, or prevent unrelated DUT groups from sharing the same matrix buses.

Sixteen 2 × 16 Matrix Banks

Internally, the PXI-2531 is organized as sixteen 2 × 16 matrix banks. This bank structure supports the standard topologies and can also be useful when designing custom interconnection accessories.

Custom fixtures must preserve the module’s electrical ratings, connector requirements, shielding and safety limitations. Verify routing behavior and relay-resource names using the NI-SWITCH documentation before developing a custom terminal interface.

60 V Switching Capability

The PXI-2531 supports channel-to-channel voltages up to 60 VDC or 30 VACrms. The channel-to-ground limit is also 60 VDC or 30 VACrms for Measurement Category I circuits.

Measurement Category I is intended for protected test and measurement signal circuits that are not directly connected to building mains installations. The module must not be used for CAT II, CAT III or CAT IV mains measurements.

0.5 A Current and 10 W Power Ratings

Each channel can switch or carry up to 0.5 A, subject to the simultaneous voltage and power limits. Maximum switching power is 10 W per channel.

The voltage, current and power ratings must all be satisfied at the same time. A circuit operating below 60 V may still exceed the module rating if its current or switching power is too high.

For signals carrying substantial current, include cable, connector, terminal-block and relay resistance when calculating total voltage drop and heat generation.

Reed Relay Switching

The PXI-2531 uses compact reed relays to provide fast operation, electrical isolation and good signal performance. Relay operate and release times are approximately 0.25 ms, although the connected signal or measurement instrument may require additional settling time.

Reed relays are particularly suitable for low-current signal routing. They are sensitive to capacitive inrush current and inductive flyback voltage, so appropriate external protection is required when switching reactive loads.

Relay Life and Load Considerations

Typical mechanical life is as high as 1 × 109 operations when no electrical load is switched. Electrical life depends strongly on voltage, current, load type and switching conditions.

Representative resistive-load life is approximately 1 × 107 cycles at 10 V and 100 mA, 5 × 106 cycles at 20 V and 500 mA, and 1 × 105 cycles at 100 V and 10 mA under the conditions defined in the specifications.

Cold switching, where the signal is removed before changing the relay state, can substantially extend relay life. Although a 100 V relay-life test condition is documented, normal system operation must remain within the PXI-2531 maximum 60 V rating.

Onboard Relay-Count Tracking

The PXI-2531 records relay operation counts to help monitor switch usage. Maintenance teams can identify heavily used crosspoints and estimate when preventive inspection or relay replacement may be required.

Relay counts should be interpreted together with the switched load. A relay switching a low-level signal generally experiences less electrical stress than one switching its maximum rated current or a reactive load.

Field-Replaceable Relays

The relays used by the PXI-2531 are field replaceable according to the applicable NI service procedure. This can help extend the useful life of a discontinued module when only a small number of crosspoints have degraded.

Relay replacement requires appropriate soldering equipment, ESD precautions, replacement components and post-repair testing. Professional service is recommended when measurement traceability or system validation must be maintained.

20 MHz Typical Bandwidth

The module-only 1-wire row-to-column path provides at least 20 MHz typical bandwidth with 50 Ω termination. The complete system bandwidth may be lower after adding a terminal block, cables, fixture wiring and connected loads.

For example, the TB-2648 and TB-2649 terminal-block configurations have topology-dependent bandwidth ratings below the bare module’s typical value. Verify the specifications for the selected accessory when signal frequency is an important requirement.

Crosstalk and Isolation

With 50 Ω termination, typical channel-to-channel crosstalk is below -70 dB at 10 kHz and 100 kHz, below -58 dB at 1 MHz and below -38 dB at 10 MHz.

Typical open-channel isolation is greater than 91 dB at 10 kHz, 71 dB at 100 kHz, 51 dB at 1 MHz and 32 dB at 10 MHz. Actual results depend on cables, terminal accessories, source impedance, load impedance and fixture layout.

Keep sensitive low-level signals separated from high-amplitude or fast-transition signals whenever possible. Shielded cables and appropriate grounding help maintain signal integrity.

Hardware-Triggered Scanning

The PXI-2531 accepts trigger signals through PXI trigger lines 0 through 7. Hardware triggering allows relay operations to be coordinated with digital multimeters, digitizers, source-measure units and other PXI instruments.

This synchronization can improve test repeatability and throughput because the switch can advance through a predefined scan list without relying entirely on nondeterministic software timing.

32,000-Step Scan Lists

A scan list defines a sequence of switch routes that the module executes in response to software commands or hardware triggers. The PXI-2531 supports long scan sequences containing as many as 32,000 steps.

Scan lists are useful when an instrument must measure hundreds of test points in a fixed order. Each step should include sufficient settling time for the relay, connected wiring, signal source and measurement instrument.

NI-SWITCH Software Support

The PXI-2531 is controlled through the NI-SWITCH instrument driver. NI-SWITCH provides functions for initializing the module, selecting a topology, connecting and disconnecting routes, configuring triggers, running scan lists and reading relay counts.

The driver supports LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI and compatible text-based programming environments. Verify operating-system and driver compatibility when maintaining an older PXI controller.

NI Switch Executive Integration

NI Switch Executive allows engineers to define routes using meaningful signal names instead of addressing every physical row, column and crosspoint directly. Named routes can make large matrix-switch applications easier to develop and maintain.

It can also coordinate routes across multiple switch modules. This is useful when several PXI-2531 modules are expanded into a matrix larger than the capacity of one module.

Expanding the Matrix

Multiple PXI-2531 modules can be interconnected to increase the number of rows, columns or independent matrix sections. Large systems can support hundreds or thousands of device-side test points.

Matrix expansion introduces additional relay stages, wiring capacitance, path resistance and signal-integrity considerations. The complete expanded path should be characterized rather than assuming the performance of a single module.

Typical PXI-2531 Applications

High-channel-count automated test equipment

Printed circuit board functional testing

Semiconductor device validation

Production end-of-line testing

Data acquisition channel scanning

Digital multimeter signal routing

Sensor and transducer testing

Electronic component characterization

Consumer electronics validation

Automotive ECU testing

Hardware-in-the-loop signal routing

Laboratory measurement automation

Parallel DUT testing

Test-fixture signal distribution

Automated Functional Testing

In a functional-test system, the PXI-2531 can connect measurement instruments and stimulus sources to many points on a circuit board or electronic assembly. Test software changes routes automatically as it progresses through the test procedure.

This reduces fixture complexity and avoids manual cable changes. Named routes and predefined scan lists also make the test sequence easier to review and maintain.

Data Acquisition and DMM Scanning

The matrix can connect a digital multimeter or data acquisition instrument to many voltage, resistance or sensor signals. Hardware triggering can coordinate each relay change with the measurement instrument.

Allow adequate settling time after each route change, especially when measuring high-impedance sources, resistance, capacitance or low-level signals.

Semiconductor and PCB Testing

The 512-crosspoint architecture is useful for semiconductor characterization and PCB testing where many device pins or board nodes must connect to a smaller collection of instruments.

When several crosspoints are closed simultaneously, verify that the selected routes do not short outputs together or create unintended current paths through the matrix.

PXI-2531 Troubleshooting

The PXI-2531 Is Not Detected in NI MAX

Confirm that the module is fully seated in a compatible PXI or hybrid slot. Check chassis power, controller communication and NI-SWITCH installation, then power-cycle the system and rescan for hardware in NI MAX.

The Expected Matrix Topology Is Not Available

Verify the selected NI-SWITCH topology and installed terminal block. The TB-2648, TB-2649, TB-2650 and TB-2651 correspond to different row, column and dual-matrix configurations.

A Route Cannot Be Connected

Check whether the requested route conflicts with another active route. Review the channel names, route specification and topology, then disconnect incompatible paths before attempting the connection again.

A Channel Has Excessive Resistance

Measure the complete path, including the relay, terminal block, cable, connector and fixture wiring. Review the relay count and compare the affected path with an unused crosspoint. A worn relay may show rapidly increasing contact resistance.

The Measurement Does Not Settle

Add delay after each relay operation. High-impedance sources, long cables, capacitive fixtures and the connected measurement instrument may require more settling time than the relay’s 0.25 ms operate specification.

The Relay Count Is Unusually High

Review the test sequence for unnecessary opening and closing operations. Reusing an existing route where safe can reduce relay wear and improve test throughput.

A Relay Fails Prematurely

Check for capacitive inrush current, inductive flyback voltage, excessive switching power or operation outside the voltage and current ratings. Use current limiting, snubbers or other appropriate protection.

The Signal Has Excessive Crosstalk

Use shielded accessories, shorten external wiring and separate high-level signals from sensitive channels. Confirm that source and load impedances match the conditions used for the published specifications.

The Hardware-Triggered Scan Does Not Advance

Verify the selected PXI trigger line, trigger direction and pulse width. Confirm that the source instrument is exporting the trigger and that the PXI-2531 scan list has been initiated before the first trigger arrives.

PXI-2531 Comparison with Similar Matrix Switch Modules

Модель

Primary Configuration

Best Suited For

PXI-2531

512 crosspoints, 60 V, 0.5 A, configurable 1-wire matrix

Maintaining high-density legacy PXI matrix systems

PXIe-2531

512 crosspoints, 60 V, 0.5 A, PXI Express interface

Current PXI Express systems requiring the same matrix architecture

PXI-2532B

512-crosspoint matrix with higher voltage capability

Matrix routing requiring higher switching voltage

PXIe-2532B

High-density PXI Express matrix with configurable topologies

Modern high-density and higher-voltage matrix systems

PXI-2530B

Multiplexer and matrix configurations

Applications needing multiple switching topologies

ПХИ-2503

Multiplexer and matrix switch architecture

General-purpose low-current signal routing

PXI-2531 vs PXIe-2531

The PXI-2531 and PXIe-2531 provide the same basic 512-crosspoint matrix architecture, supported topologies and 60 V, 0.5 A electrical ratings.
