module and safety, environmental and regulatory documentation. The PXI Express chassis, controller, QSFP28 cable and required software are normally selected separately.

50 Gigabit Ethernet Connectivity

The PXIe-8280 provides one Ethernet connection supporting link speeds up to 50 Gb/s. This bandwidth makes it suitable for transferring data generated by high-speed digitizers, RF instruments, FlexRIO modules and other data-intensive PXI hardware.

The 50 GbE link rate represents the network signaling rate. Application-level data throughput will be lower because of Ethernet framing, RDMA protocol overhead, memory performance, PCI Express bandwidth, controller resources and the performance of the remote endpoint.

QSFP28 Ethernet Port

The ETH 0 connection uses a QSFP28 port. It accepts a compatible active optical cable or passive direct-attach copper cable.

Passive copper cables are commonly used for short connections within the same rack or between adjacent systems. Active optical cables are more suitable when longer transmission distance, lower cable weight or improved electrical isolation is required.

Verify that the selected cable is compatible with the NVIDIA or Mellanox-based network interface and supports the required 50 GbE operating mode.

RDMA Technology

Remote Direct Memory Access allows one system to transfer data directly to or from memory in another compatible system with reduced CPU involvement. This differs from conventional socket-based Ethernet communication, where the operating system and processor may copy data through several software buffers.

Reducing memory copies and processor intervention can provide lower latency, more predictable transfer behavior and greater data-transfer efficiency.

The PXIe-8280 supports RDMA over Converged Ethernet version 2. RoCE v2 carries RDMA traffic over routable UDP/IP networks, subject to correct network and endpoint configuration.

RoCE v2 Support

RoCE v2 allows RDMA communication across compatible Ethernet infrastructure. Both endpoints must support RoCE v2 and be configured for the same network parameters.

Depending on the network design, lossless Ethernet settings, priority flow control, appropriate switch configuration and suitable packet-size settings may be required to achieve reliable high-throughput performance.

A normal Ethernet connection alone does not guarantee RDMA operation. The driver, remote interface, network switch and application must all support the required RDMA workflow.

PCI Express Gen3 ×8 Backplane Link

The PXIe-8280 connects to the PXI Express backplane through a PCI Express Gen3 ×8 link. This interface provides the internal bandwidth required to move data between the Ethernet controller and the PXI system.

Install the module in a slot that supplies the required PCI Express link resources. Overall throughput can be limited if the chassis routes several high-bandwidth slots through a shared upstream PCI Express link.

Review the chassis PCI Express topology when designing a system containing multiple digitizers, storage modules and high-speed Ethernet interfaces.

NVIDIA ConnectX Ethernet Architecture

The module incorporates an NVIDIA ConnectX-based Ethernet adapter. The ConnectX controller manages Ethernet communication, RDMA processing and the QSFP28 interface.

On Windows systems, the Ethernet controller requires a compatible Mellanox WinOF-2 driver in addition to PXI Platform Services and NI-RDMA. Driver versions should be validated together before deploying or upgrading a production system.

PXI-to-Server Data Transfer

The PXIe-8280 can transfer acquired data from a PXI Express system to an external server for storage, post-processing or further analysis.

This architecture is useful when the PXI controller does not provide enough local processor, GPU or storage capacity for the application. The PXI system performs the measurement while the remote server receives and processes the resulting data.

External Storage Integration

High-speed digitizers and RF instruments can generate large volumes of waveform data. The PXIe-8280 can provide a network path to an RDMA-compatible storage server or data-recording system.

The sustained recording rate depends on the network connection and the destination storage subsystem. A 50 GbE link alone cannot compensate for slow disks, insufficient memory bandwidth or an underpowered storage controller.

NVMe arrays or other high-throughput storage architectures may be required for continuous recording near the available network rate.

PXI-to-PXI Data Exchange

Two or more PXI Express systems equipped with compatible RDMA interfaces can exchange data over Ethernet. This allows measurement tasks to be distributed across several chassis.

One chassis may contain high-speed acquisition instruments, while another contains FPGA processing, signal generation or data-storage hardware. RDMA provides a low-latency method for moving data between these systems.

Multi-Chassis Data Aggregation

Large test systems may use several PXI Express chassis because one chassis cannot hold every required instrument. The PXIe-8280 allows data from these chassis to be transferred to a central server or aggregation system.

This architecture is useful for large channel-count acquisition, radar testing, distributed RF monitoring, semiconductor characterization and systems containing instruments at several physical locations.

CPU Offload

Conventional network transfers can require the CPU to manage socket operations and copy data between application, operating-system and network buffers. RDMA transfers can reduce this overhead by moving data more directly between registered memory regions.

CPU offload leaves more processing capacity available for test sequencing, measurement analysis, visualization and control. Actual CPU savings depend on the application and transfer implementation.

Low-Latency Data Movement

The combination of RoCE v2 and a PCI Express Gen3 ×8 connection makes the PXIe-8280 suitable for applications where transfer latency is important.

Examples include distributed signal processing, real-time monitoring, event-driven data exchange and high-speed communication between measurement and analysis systems.

Network switches, cable length, endpoint configuration and software buffering still contribute to end-to-end latency.

Windows Software Support

A Windows PXIe-8280 system requires PXI Platform Services, Mellanox WinOF-2 and NI-RDMA. NI lists version 21.5 as the earliest supported version for PXI Platform Services and NI-RDMA.

The earliest listed Mellanox WinOF-2 version is 2.70.51000. NI recommends installing compatible current driver versions supported by the operating system and complete PXI application.

NI Linux Real-Time Support

The PXIe-8280 can also operate with a compatible NI Linux Real-Time PXI controller. NI Linux Real-Time systems require PXI Platform Services and NI-RDMA.

A real-time controller can combine deterministic test execution with high-speed network data transfer. However, network communication itself is still affected by endpoint, switch and traffic conditions.

NI-RDMA Programming

The NI-RDMA driver provides the programming interface used to exchange data between compatible systems. Applications register memory buffers, create communication endpoints and initiate data transfers through the supported API.

The sending and receiving systems must agree on buffer sizes, data formats, transfer order and error-handling behavior. Applications should monitor connection status, completion events and transfer errors.

Network Architecture Requirements

For a direct connection, a compatible QSFP28 cable can connect the PXIe-8280 to another suitable 50 GbE RDMA interface. Switched systems require an Ethernet switch supporting the required port speed and network configuration.

Before deployment, verify:

50 GbE compatibility at both endpoints

RoCE v2 support

QSFP28 cable compatibility

IP addressing and subnet configuration

MTU and jumbo-frame configuration

Switch flow-control settings

Memory and storage throughput

Firewall and network-security policies

Jumbo Frame Considerations

Larger Ethernet frames can reduce packet-processing overhead during bulk data transfer. If jumbo frames are used, every component in the path must support and use a compatible maximum transmission unit.

An MTU mismatch can cause failed communication, fragmentation or reduced performance. Validate the complete path from the PXIe-8280 through any network switches to the remote endpoint.

Active Optical Cable Operation

An active optical QSFP28 cable converts the high-speed electrical interface to optical signals within the connector assemblies. Optical cables can support longer distances and are generally lighter than equivalent long copper assemblies.

Using an optical cable increases the module’s maximum power consumption to approximately 30.02 W. Confirm cable compatibility and the chassis cooling capability before installation.

Passive Direct-Attach Copper Operation

A passive direct-attach copper cable provides a cost-effective connection over relatively short distances. It does not require the optical conversion circuitry used in an active optical cable.

Maximum module power with a passive cable is approximately 27.52 W. Copper cables can be heavier and less flexible, so provide appropriate strain relief without applying directional force to the QSFP28 connector.

Chassis Cooling Requirements

The PXIe-8280 requires a chassis slot with at least 58 W of cooling capacity. This requirement is higher than the module’s electrical power consumption because sufficient airflow must remove heat from the Ethernet controller and associated components.

Not every chassis rated for 58 W cooling can maintain the module’s full 0°C to 55°C operating range. Review the specific chassis documentation for slot cooling and ambient-temperature limitations.

Use slot blockers and filler panels according to the chassis instructions to direct airflow through installed modules.

Compatible PXI Express Slots

The PXIe-8280 occupies one 3U PXI Express slot. It can be installed in a PXI Express peripheral slot or compatible hybrid peripheral slot.

It cannot be installed in a conventional PXI-only slot. The selected slot must also provide the required PCI Express bandwidth and chassis cooling.

Front-Panel Status Indicators

The front panel provides SPEED and LINK/ACT indicators for checking the Ethernet connection.

Indicator

Status

Meaning

SPEED

Off

No Ethernet link is established

SPEED

Green

The connection is operating at 50 GbE

SPEED

Amber

The established connection is below 50 GbE

LINK/ACT

Off

No network link

LINK/ACT

Green

Link established with no current activity

LINK/ACT

Blinking Green

Link established with network activity

Typical PXIe-8280 Applications

High-speed measurement-data offload

PXI-to-server waveform streaming

PXI-to-external-storage data recording

Distributed PXI test systems

Multi-chassis data exchange

Large channel-count data aggregation

Radar and electronic warfare testing

Wideband RF spectrum monitoring

High-speed digitizer data transfer

Wireless communication research

Валидация полупроводников

Scientific data acquisition

Remote signal processing

Automated production testing

High-Speed Digitizer Streaming

A PXI Express digitizer can acquire waveform data and transfer it through the controller memory to the PXIe-8280 for delivery to another system. RDMA helps reduce the CPU overhead associated with moving large data buffers over Ethernet.

Continuous streaming performance depends on the digitizer rate, PCI Express topology, controller memory bandwidth and remote receiving system.

RF and Spectrum Monitoring

Wideband RF instruments can produce large streams of complex I/Q samples. The PXIe-8280 can move this data to a server containing additional CPUs, GPUs or storage resources.

This architecture allows the PXI system to remain close to the RF front end while computationally intensive analysis is performed on a remote system.

Radar and Electronic Warfare Systems

Radar and electronic warfare validation can require simultaneous capture of wideband signals and rapid transfer to external processing hardware. The 50 GbE RDMA connection provides a suitable data-movement interface for these demanding applications.

End-to-end performance must be validated using the actual instruments, record sizes, processing algorithms and network configuration.

PXIe-8280 Installation Workflow

Step 1: Verify Chassis Compatibility

Confirm that the selected PXI Express or hybrid peripheral slot provides the required PCI Express resources and at least 58 W of cooling capacity.

Step 2: Install the Drivers

Install PXI Platform Services and NI-RDMA. For Windows systems, also install a compatible Mellanox WinOF-2 driver.

Step 3: Install the Module

Power off the chassis, insert the PXIe-8280 into the selected slot and secure both front-panel mounting screws.

Step 4: Connect the QSFP28 Cable

Attach a compatible passive copper or active optical QSFP28 cable to ETH 0 and provide strain relief near the connector.

Step 5: Configure the Network

Configure the IP address, subnet, MTU and applicable RoCE v2 network settings on both endpoints.

Step 6: Verify the Link

Check the SPEED and LINK/ACT indicators. A green SPEED LED confirms a 50 GbE link, while an amber LED indicates a lower negotiated speed.

Step 7: Test RDMA Transfer

Run a controlled transfer between the PXI system and remote endpoint, then verify throughput, latency, buffer integrity and error handling.

PXIe-8280 Troubleshooting

The PXIe-8280 is not detected

Confirm that the module is fully installed in a PXI Express or hybrid peripheral slot. Check chassis power, controller communication and PXI Platform Services installation.

The SPEED LED is off

No Ethernet connection has been established. Inspect the QSFP28 cable, verify that the remote endpoint is powered and confirm port and transceiver compatibility.

The SPEED LED is amber

The Ethernet connection is operating below 50 GbE. Check the remote interface, cable capability, network-switch configuration and manually configured link-speed settings.

The LINK/ACT LED does not blink

A steady green indicator means a link exists but no traffic is currently detected. Verify IP configuration, application operation and RDMA endpoint settings.

Standard Ethernet works but RDMA does not

Confirm that NI-RDMA is installed on supported systems and that both endpoints support RoCE v2. Review switch flow control, firewall, MTU and RDMA network settings.

Data throughput is lower than expected

Check the PXI Express slot topology, cable link speed, MTU, transfer-buffer size, controller memory bandwidth and remote storage performance. Small transfers may not use the available network bandwidth efficiently.

Data packets are lost under heavy load

Review network-switch buffering, priority flow control, congestion management and receiving-buffer configuration. Validate that the destination application processes incoming data fast enough.

The module becomes too hot

Verify that the chassis provides at least 58 W of slot cooling. Increase the fan setting where supported and install filler panels or slot blockers in empty slots.

The optical cable is not recognized

Confirm that the cable is Mellanox-compatible and supports the intended 50 GbE mode. Inspect the QSFP28 connectors and check the Ethernet driver diagnostics.

RDMA stopped working after a driver update

Verify compatibility between NI-RDMA, PXI Platform Services, Mellanox WinOF-2 and the operating system. Restore a validated driver combination if the problem began after an upgrade.

PXIe-8280 Comparison with Related PXI Ethernet Interfaces

Модель

Ethernet Configuration

Primary Advantage

PXIe-8280

1 × QSFP28, up to 50 GbE

Maximum bandwidth through one physical port

PXIe-8285

2 × SFP28, up to 25 GbE per port

Two independently accessible Ethernet connections

PXIe-8521

Automotive Ethernet interface

Automotive network testing and communication

Standard Gigabit Ethernet

RJ45, typically 1 GbE

General instrument and network connectivity

PXIe-8280 vs PXIe-8285

Земля PXIe-8285 provides two SFP28 ports operating at up to 25 GbE per port. The PXIe-8280 provides one QSFP28 port supporting up to 50 GbE.

Choose the PXIe-8280 when the application requires a single 50 GbE connection. Choose the PXIe-8285 when two separate 25 GbE connections, redundant paths or connection to two endpoints is more important.

PXIe-8280 vs Standard Ethernet Interface

A standard Ethernet adapter is sufficient for instrument control, configuration and moderate data transfer. The PXIe-8280 is designed for data-intensive applications requiring substantially higher bandwidth and RDMA support.

RDMA capability is particularly valuable when large waveform buffers must be moved repeatedly with reduced CPU overhead and latency.

PXIe-8280 vs PXI Remote Control Module

The PXIe-8280 is a network and data-movement interface. It does not replace a PXI embedded controller or a remote-control MXI interface.

A remote-control module extends the PCI Express bus so an external computer controls the PXI chassis. The PXIe-8280 transfers application data over Ethernet between systems that already have their own controller or host architecture.

Recommended Related Products

PXIe-8285 Two-Port 25 Gigabit RDMA Ethernet Module

PXIe-8521 Automotive Ethernet Interface Module

PXIe-8374 PXI Express Remote Control Module

PXIe-8383 PXI Express Remote Control Module

PXIe-1085 PXI Express Chassis

PXIe-1092 PXI Express Chassis

PXIe-1095 High-Performance PXI Express Chassis

PXIe-8842 Embedded Controller

PXIe-8862 Embedded Controller

View More NI PXI and PXI Express Modules

Selecting the Right PXI Data-Movement Interface

Choose the PXIe-8280 when the system requires one high-bandwidth 50 GbE connection and RoCE v2 RDMA.
