The recommended SH68-68-EPM cable connects the module to accessories such as the SCB-68A, BNC-2110 or TBX-68. The TB-2705 attaches directly to the PXI module and does not require a separate cable.

Eight Independent Voltage Outputs

The PXI-6713 provides eight independent analog voltage outputs. Each channel can generate a different waveform, setpoint or simulated sensor signal, allowing one module to replace several individual waveform or control instruments.

Dedicated DAC channels preserve the timing relationship between outputs. Engineers can create multichannel signals with controlled phase, amplitude and frequency relationships.

Simultaneous Multichannel Updating

All active output channels latch their new values simultaneously. This avoids the interchannel delay associated with multiplexed analog output modules and is important for phase-sensitive and multiaxis applications.

Simultaneous updates are useful for three-phase signal simulation, multiaxis actuator commands, coordinated power-supply programming and sensor-array simulation.

12-Bit Analog Output Resolution

The output DACs provide 12-bit resolution, equivalent to 4,096 theoretical voltage levels. Across the standard ±10 V range, one ideal least-significant bit represents approximately 4.88 mV.

Actual output accuracy depends on gain error, offset error, noise, reference accuracy, temperature and calibration. A 16-bit module should be considered when finer voltage increments are required.

±10 V Output Range

Each channel provides a standard voltage range of -10 V to +10 V. This range is commonly used by laboratory instruments, programmable power supplies, industrial controllers and electronic test fixtures.

The outputs are ground referenced and do not provide galvanic isolation. Add external isolation when the controlled system operates at a different ground potential or requires protection from common-mode voltage.

External Voltage Reference

The multiplying DAC architecture allows the output channels to use the onboard reference or a compatible external voltage reference. An external reference can scale the effective output span for an application that does not require the full ±10 V range.

The external reference must provide adequate stability, current capacity and low noise. Reference and analog output terminals must remain within their specified voltage limits.

High-Speed Waveform Generation

The PXI-6713 can generate sine, square, triangular, sawtooth and arbitrary waveforms. Users define each voltage point and the hardware update clock determines when successive samples are applied to the outputs.

The maximum practical waveform frequency depends on the number of samples per cycle, active channel count and required signal fidelity. More samples per period improve waveform representation but reduce the resulting fundamental frequency.

16,384-Sample Onboard FIFO

A 16,384-sample onboard FIFO buffers analog output data. Short periodic waveforms can be regenerated from this memory without transferring every sample repeatedly across the PXI bus.

The FIFO is twice the size of the buffer provided by the four-channel PXI-6711. Buffer management is handled through NI-DAQmx according to the selected finite, continuous and regeneration settings.

Periodic Waveform Regeneration

Periodic regeneration repeatedly outputs data stored in the onboard or host buffer. This is appropriate for continuous sine waves, cyclic test patterns and repeating simulated sensor signals.

Using onboard regeneration reduces host-processor and PXI-bus activity. The waveform must fit within the available buffer allocation for the active channels.

Nonperiodic Waveform Generation

Nonperiodic generation produces a finite or continuously changing sequence. It can reproduce startup profiles, ramps, transients, fault conditions and prerecorded control signals.

Continuous streaming requires the host controller to supply data faster than the output hardware consumes it. Insufficient throughput causes a buffer-underflow error.

Fast Slew Rate and Settling

The output circuitry has a typical slew rate of approximately 20 V/µs and typically settles to within ±1 LSB of a full-scale transition in approximately 3 µs.

Settling time can increase with capacitive loading, long cables and low-impedance equipment. Verify performance with the actual fixture and load when output accuracy immediately after a transition is important.

±5 mA Output Drive

Each channel can drive approximately ±5 mA within the specified conditions. This is sufficient for many high-impedance control and instrumentation inputs.

The PXI-6713 should not be used to directly power motors, lamps, solenoids or other significant loads. Add an external buffer or power amplifier when additional output current is required.

Sensor and Signal Simulation

The eight outputs can simulate voltage-output sensors and electronic control signals. Test programs can reproduce normal operation, changing conditions, drift, noise, intermittent behavior and programmed fault states.

Multiple channels can simulate related sensors with precisely controlled timing. This is useful for validating electronic controllers without connecting the complete physical system.

Stimulus-Response Testing

The PXI-6713 can generate voltage stimulus while separate PXI instruments measure the response of a device under test. Shared clocks and triggers provide a repeatable timing relationship between generation and acquisition.

Typical applications include amplifier testing, filter characterization, control-loop evaluation and electromechanical response testing.

Power-Supply and Load Programming

Analog outputs can control compatible programming inputs on power supplies, electronic loads and amplifiers. Each channel can provide a static value, ramp or dynamic profile.

Verify the equipment’s programming-input voltage, polarity, input impedance and grounding. Do not connect the PXI-6713 output to a supply’s high-energy power terminals.

Deterministic Control

Hardware-timed generation provides more repeatable output timing than software-timed writes. The module can execute preloaded control profiles without requiring the host operating system to command every point individually.

Overall control-loop determinism depends on the controller, operating system, acquisition hardware and software architecture. The PXI-6713 is not an FPGA-based module.

Eight Digital I/O Lines

The PXI-6713 includes eight bidirectional 5 V TTL/CMOS digital I/O lines. These channels can control external logic, monitor status signals or support test-fixture sequencing.

The lines are not compatible with 24 V industrial signals without external conditioning. Use level translators, buffers or isolated digital interfaces when connecting industrial equipment.

Two 24-Bit Counter/Timers

Two general-purpose 24-bit counter/timers use a 20 MHz timebase. They support event counting, pulse generation, frequency measurement, period measurement and pulse-width measurement.

The counters can generate clocks and trigger signals for waveform tasks or external equipment. Counter routing is software configurable through NI-DAQmx.

Digital Triggering

A digital start trigger can initiate waveform generation at a defined hardware event. Triggering provides a more repeatable start time than issuing separate software commands.

Trigger sources can be routed from front-panel programmable function terminals or compatible PXI backplane lines. Confirm that the selected route is not reserved by another module.

External Update Clocking

An external clock can determine when the PXI-6713 outputs accept new samples. This allows waveform generation to follow another instrument, controller or experimental timing source.

The external clock must satisfy the specified voltage, pulse-width and frequency requirements. Shielded wiring and suitable termination help maintain signal integrity.

PXI Backplane Synchronization

The module can share triggers and reference timing through the PXI chassis backplane. Multiple PXI-6713 modules can therefore be coordinated to increase the number of synchronized analog outputs.

Correct synchronization requires explicit clock and trigger routing in NI-DAQmx. Slave generation tasks should normally be armed before the master task issues the start trigger.

Typical PXI-6713 Applications

Multichannel arbitrary waveform generation

Sensor and signal simulation

Hardware-in-the-loop testing

Stimulus-response testing

Power-supply programming

Electronic load control

High-speed deterministic control

PID control experiments

Multiaxis actuator command generation

Автоматизированное испытательное оборудование

Production functional testing

Laboratory automation

Phase-related signal generation

Hardware-in-the-Loop Testing

The PXI-6713 can reproduce voltage signals expected from sensors and subsystems during HIL testing. Eight channels allow a single module to simulate several related signals with synchronized timing.

Test software can modify amplitude, frequency and phase or insert ramps, dropouts and other fault conditions. External protection is recommended when connecting to powered controller inputs.

Automated Production Testing

In a production system, the module can supply stimulus voltages and programmable control levels to a device under test. Digital and counter channels can coordinate fixture and trigger operations.

Hardware-timed generation improves repeatability between tested units and reduces dependence on software execution timing.

Laboratory Waveform Generation

The eight channels can replace multiple low-frequency benchtop generators in applications that fit the module’s voltage, update-rate and accuracy specifications. Common or custom waveforms can be configured through one software interface.

The PXI-6713 is not intended to replace RF or high-frequency arbitrary waveform generators. Its primary strengths are multichannel density, synchronized output and PXI integration.

NI-DAQmx Software Support

The PXI-6713 is controlled through the NI-DAQmx driver. NI-DAQmx supports static voltage writes, finite and continuous generation, waveform regeneration, digital I/O, counters, external clocking and trigger routing.

Applications can be developed using LabVIEW, LabWindows/CVI, C/C++ and compatible .NET environments. NI Measurement & Automation Explorer can identify the module and perform basic diagnostic operations.

PXI-6713 Lifecycle and Replacement

The PXI-6713 is discontinued and listed by NI with limited support. It remains useful for maintaining established PXI systems that depend on its 68-pin wiring, output timing and NI-DAQmx configuration.

NI recommends the PXIe-6738, part number 783800-01, as a replacement. The newer module provides 32 outputs, 16-bit resolution and a PXI Express interface but is not a direct wiring replacement.

PXI-6713 Troubleshooting

The PXI-6713 is not detected in NI MAX

Confirm that the module is fully installed in a compatible PXI or PXI hybrid slot. Check chassis power, controller communication and NI-DAQmx installation, then restart the system.

An analog output remains at 0 V

Verify the selected physical channel, wiring and task configuration. Check whether the task is waiting for a digital trigger that has not occurred.

The output amplitude is incorrect

Confirm the programmed voltage and whether the output uses the onboard or external reference. Check the external reference amplitude and the connected load impedance.

The output cannot drive the connected load

The output current is limited to approximately ±5 mA. Use an external buffer or power amplifier when the load impedance requires more current.

The waveform becomes distorted at higher frequencies

Check the number of samples per period, update rate, cable capacitance and load impedance. Allow sufficient settling time after large voltage transitions.

Eight-channel generation is slower than expected

With all eight channels active, the maximum documented rate is approximately 740 kS/s per channel using onboard regeneration or 769 kS/s per channel using host memory under the documented conditions.

Continuous generation stops with a buffer-underflow error

Increase the software buffer, write larger data blocks and avoid slow processing in the generation loop. Use onboard regeneration when the waveform repeats.

The channels do not start simultaneously

Configure all required channels in one hardware-timed analog output task. The PXI-6711 provides four channels, while the PXI-6713 provides eight.

Choose the PXI-6711 when four outputs are sufficient and every channel must run at 1 MS/s. Choose the PXI-6713 when additional synchronized channels are required and reduced full-channel update rates are acceptable.

PXI-6713 vs PXI-6722

Земля PXI-6722 provides eight 13-bit outputs with update rates up to 800 kS/s per channel. The PXI-6713 provides 12-bit resolution but can reach 1 MS/s with up to five active channels.

Select the PXI-6713 for faster low-channel-count generation. Select the PXI-6722 when its higher nominal resolution and eight-channel performance better match the application.

PXI-6713 vs PXI-6733

Земля PXI-6733 provides eight outputs with 16-bit resolution and similar high-speed waveform capability. It offers considerably finer voltage resolution than the 12-bit PXI-6713.

The PXI-6713 is appropriate for maintaining existing 12-bit systems. Choose the PXI-6733 when higher precision is required and the application supports its hardware and accessories.

PXI-6713 vs PXIe-6738

Земля PXIe-6738 is the NI-recommended replacement for the discontinued PXI-6713. It provides 32 analog outputs, 16-bit resolution and a PXI Express interface.

The PXIe-6738 offers greater resolution, current drive and channel density. Migration requires checking the chassis, connector pinout, cable accessories, software configuration and waveform timing.

Recommended Related Products

PXI-6711 4-Channel 12-Bit Analog Output Module

PXI-6722 8-Channel 13-Bit Analog Output Module

PXI-6723 32-Channel Analog Output Module

PXI-6733 8-Channel 16-Bit Analog Output Module

PXIe-6738 32-Channel 16-Bit Analog Output Module

PXI-6704 Static Voltage and Current Output Module

View More NI PXI and PXI Express Modules

Selecting the Right PXI Analog Output Module

Choose the PXI-6713 when the application requires eight simultaneous ±10 V outputs, 12-bit resolution, high-speed arbitrary waveform generation and integrated digital and counter functions.

Select the PXI-6711 when only four channels are required.
